When do you all clip and what clips does everyone have? Nosey aren't I? I was thinking of a minimal clip for Pete, he was full clipped last year but working much more than he will be now. Winter coats are coming through.

i will clip in october. i like a trace clip, this clip is fine for her and i like to keep a bit of hair on her to keep her warm.she has gone from sleek tb coat to a very hairy horse in just a few weeks.every time i ride she sweats a lot now.i dont clip to early as i like her to finish growing her winter coat.i dont want to rug her to soon.but i do love it when she is clipped as she looks lovely.she is brilliant to clip and enjoys it and doesnt move a muscle.it is the one thing she is perfect at.bay.

Peter is fine with it too just falls asleep! It's a shame when they have to be sedated. The lovely cob at our new yard is not too keen on the clippers, and he is gonna need a big haircut. He comes in from the field sweating1

There was a good pull out spread in Your horse or horse and rider on different types of clips. A good tip i picked up is to use chalk to mark out the lines and charcoal or coloured chalk for grey horses. Kieran had a neck and belly one last year - something similar to that img.webme.com/pic/c/clipshorseclipping/trace-clip.jpg

since Sumo will be out neck and belly will be the order of the day!
use string with knots to measure down from the wither and quarters to ensure same amount of clip on both sides!! although I always say no-one can see both sides at the same time!
I use hoof oil to mark my lines - chalk tends to flake off too easy!

Dexter not clipped at all but he goes out whatever the weather without a rug.
Brave - just starting to go fluffy, he will probably have a trace clip again and will probably end up doing it in October ish
Chompy - has turned into a teddy bear overnight and has been sweating like a demon when worked so his hair may come off this afternoon as its raining today...

I usually do it in October. If your horse lives out, I would suggest putting a light rug on for a few days before clipping (if weather permits) so his coat will be clean and dry when you get around to it. I usually do a full clip - habit really. My horses used to be worked hard in winter but they have had it a lot easier these last few years. I do use an exercise blanket on them warming up in the frosty weather.
Cori is very hard to clip and I should be starting his prepartion now!!! JB is fairly good. Its not a job I like as it makes me think of cold dark evenings and hair everywhere! Another tip- a paper overall, the sort that you get really cheap in hardware stores is brilliant for protecting your clothes and hair. (as long as you zip it up!)

I wear the oldest clothes imaginable topped off by an overall and still manage to get clipped hair in my bra.... so uncomfortable

Ha ha ha. Yes, really uncomfortable. The paper overalls have a hood and if you remember to pull up the hood and pull the zip right to the top, it does seem to cut out the the bra hair!! Only the face gets covered

Despite the fact that T is all fluffy, the boys are still sleek although losing summer coat like a blizzard. I don't clip either of them. When they are rugged at night they don't get a really thick coat (they are naked during the day) and they don't seem to do enough to get them hugely sweaty.

I don't clip either...It's too flippin exposed where they are....if they would even let me near with clippers in first place which i actually doubt Murph would as he was petrified of lil battery ones I tried to trim him with once!
I have always found they don't get too sweaty really but my riding is limited by the dark nights anyhow to mainly weekends so they have a pretty easy time of it.

In the summer Chompy had 1 full clip and his legs and mane done every 6 weeks-ish in winter he get 3 or 4 full clips, Brave had a trace clip done twice last year. I think my blades just knackered on Chompys last clip they have been sharpened so many times I cant actually remember so it might be for some new ones

Savvy usually has neck and belly and bracken just has a neck clip but savs isn't in work so no clip this year. Savs loves it and stands like a rock and it only costs us £15 to have them both done (my RI does it and she's ace)
