The new hairy cob keeps chewing his legs so we have had a good look and the skin seems quite pink and a bit scabby even after his bath on Monday, anyone have any experience of mites in horses?

try either a dieluted mixture of detal and water or frontline spay or the vet can give a injection for this which should keep them at bay also if it gets bad i dont like saying this but the feathers may need cliping pig oil and sulphur also can help

You could also try one of the nit treatments from the chemist. Mind you, they look at you a bit funny if one small bottle is not enough...

No experience but Hibiscrub maybe...put on neat for about 10 mins then wash off removing scrabs and drting well. Then use antiseptic cream like savlon. This was what i was told for Murph's scabby 'rain scaldy like' legs last year and it works pretty well.
I think Becca's bernie had leg mites before, if she pops on it might be owrth asking her or pming her incase she pops on?

I bought some frontline spray online, your only supposed to get it with a prescription for a horse as its not licenced for them, but as always you can buy anything online.
I gave up the battle and clipped the feathers off, Chompy also suffered mud fever badly and clipping kills 2 birds with 1 stone so to speak.

I thought the frontline would be the best way forward, but my friend has decided to go the llouse powder route for now. I would give in and chop feathers too but they ar beautiful if not practical. On the question of mud fever, is it true that the ground can become 'infected' and contribute to spreading it amongst horse?

but you would need he frountline spay and the little spot on you would nee to many if you look on ebay for it but go worldwide and you can get it cheeper i wouldnt get it from the vets as they wont let you have it for a horse as someone says its not licenced for horses they now sell frountline in some petshops however they only do the spot on so you would need to get it online ive saved so much from getting mine from a differnt contry

Definately go for Frontline spray. My old cob came to me with the most horrendous case of mites - scabs up to her knees. We had to sedate her to clip all her lovely feathers off, then sprayed with frontline. It got rid of the blighters. But she did need frequent repeat treatments of it otherwise she would get another outbreak. It's a real battle - harder if she wants to keep the feathers.

Don't forget that you should chuck out all your bedding, disinfect the stable and put all new bedding down, disinfect all your grooming kit, overreach and or brushing boots etc.

It's a nightmare! The frontline seems to have helped touch wood.

Chopping them off (the feathers) is the only real solution...
