Part 1 Although he technically jumped a log in woods a week or so ago now I have been starting to teach Harry to jump and doing some pole work. Bought some coloured poles at end of last week so here of some pics of his first session with them.... 'I'm not sure about these mum, are you sure they don't eat ponies?' First try at a trot - Rather wiggly! Bit straigher once the wings were introduced Murph even fancied a go with them and actually came down to see what was going on hence our clampit attire! We have also been doing some raised poles with him and a small jump last time to finish but OH forget the camera but being a sensible chap Harry didn't see the point in jumping it anyhow and just trotted over it as if it was a raised pole. Keeping him straight is a general issue so any advice/tips/exercises etc gratefully recieved

he's a lovely boy and looks to trust you!
to keep him straight i'd try making a V up to one pole with the other pole if you get me? this is also good when you start jumping higher 'cause it should help channel him into it!
another good one is putting them in a circle on the floor and doing them on a circle- then you can play about shortening and lenghening the stride as you get closer/further from the centre!
keep it up and keep the pictures coming! x

Did you fastforward that first video or were my eyes deceiving me? I love your jumps ;D You could put 2 poles out like train tracks (parallel) on either side of the trotting poles, you can also do this for the jump. Abi's idea of channeling him into the jump is a good idea - just prop a pole on either wing or on the poles themselves. Its difficult to get them straight but the ones i have ridden, with practice they become straight, so just ride them forwards, keep your reins the same length and use your legs to 'buffet' them, so they will be in a straight line. I would imagine it would give them confidence with you riding positively it should come because i think its probably just a confidence issue the wigglyness because its new and tricky.

i had more ideas too (sorry, i love playing with trotting poles!)
you could make a box out of the poles (if you can find one more, if not do it against a wall or seomthing!) and practice stopping inside the box, with front legs in and back legs out, walking with left legs one side of the pole and right legs the other, ect, ect. they can really help accuracy and control, and hopefully keep harry interested!

Great piccys! Murph looked really good doing it. Abi and Fleas ideas for straightness sound really good.

Thanks guys, will try some of the ideas above next time...did attempt to last night but racaille the sky was even blacker than above and blowing a gale to boot. Poor old harry was trying to behave but everytime it rained we went sideways as he turned his back to it so gave up as a bad job after about 10 mins as it couldn't decide what to do and although I don't blame him in the slightest for not wanting to head on into it, it just wasn't constructive either to continue.
I would gladly swop green grass for sunshine right now!

well you are getting a row from me- STOP looking down!!
my old instructor used to say' if you look at the ground thats where you will end up' put a cone or summit at the far end of the poles and look up at it as you go over the poles- he has to learn to sort himself out and you just have to keep in balance and let him get on with it!
as abi says above having the poles on a circle will be easier for him and also find random poles scattered about get them sharper and thinking more - just done look down at them mrs clampit!!

Spiky collar ordered from ebay I should have learned my lesson the amount of times I ahve been whacked in face going under low brances whilst looking down then sitting up too soon as can't see if clear but sadly I haven't

don't look down at the jump...or as my riding instructor says "you'll end up going there" (your horse will stop to look at it)
