Feed lots of garlic too - it comes out in the skin and flies dont like the taste - works really well and lasts onger than spray. I do that and then just use spray on really suseptible bits like sheath and round face.
It takes a couple of weeks to kick in though.
Use real garlic and crush it yourself (pooey pong tho) or I find whole garlic from global herbs good...

Garlic against flies? I always feed Dems garlic because it is a strong teek repellent, but I never saw any difference re- the flies.

ok got one here from a book on insect protection - havent tried it out but anyway - its worth a shot!
For the field: Mix equal amounts of water and fruit vinegar with a shot of 'frenchman oil' (from chemist)
For riding: Mix grapefruit seed extract (from chemist) according instructions given on the package.
For the field and riding: Mix equal amounts of water, fruit vinegar and eucalyptus bath oil with some clove or lavender oil (15ml per litre). Essential oils must be diluted to prevent skin irritation.

2 tips for flyspray both of which I got from this forum 1- Parafin diluted with water (1 : 10) that was from Brigidier 2. Mint flavoured (!!) Head and Shoulders shampoo which apparently gives a nice smell as well. Can't remember who gave that one. WIll try out both. Flies haven't arrived here yet!
