I really resent paying the ridicoulous amount charged for dried garlic and am happy to use fresh garlic even if the feed room stinks.I do think fresh is always better.
now i use a clove a day but this is not based on any science just seems about right but what do you all think?

Am I right and is garlic used to ward off infection ? Can't see any harm in one clove a day. I suppose you mush it up and add to feed? Have you noticed any good effects? If so, I'll give it a go. You're dead right, these supplements cost an arm and a leg.

Wow..great minds..I was actually going to ask if it was safe to do this. I have for yeras and years but yesterday someone pointed out that as it's a sort of member of onion family is it safe to feed as onions are poisionous?
I give 1 to 2 cloves a day (depending on size)

I have always been told that feeding fresh garlic wasnt a good idea as it is too strong on horses sensitive stomachs.
But maybe not? lol

Do they eat it happily? And surely dried garlic would have the same effect on their bloods??? Jury is out on this one for me- I used to feed dried garlic but dont now- but not for any reason other than I can now afford fly repellant and they are more effective than they used to be. Just bought a gallon of liquid parrafin so if nothing else Basil will have a very glossy coat! brig

if you are worried, buy global herbs bag of whole dried garlic - its only about £3 and has got loads in it...
I have always fed straight garlic - it was a tip in YH I think coz its stronger you need less...I certainly find it helps with the flies.. ;D
ere, from GH
Garlic Real Shredded Garlic 1kg packs or 5kg stable packs
Horses find these shreds of garlic irresistable. Whole cloves are crushed and dried quickly to include roots and skin which add valuable nutritional quality to the resultant product. For ease of purchase these bags of garlic are supplied in 1kg or 5kg refill packs. The garlic inside has very high levels of plant chemicals that are needed to get the results you need. Helpful for flies, breathing, skin condition and parasite control this garlic is great value for money and gives your horses a great treat every day you feed it. Generally this form of garlic is much more palatable than granules or powder. However we do supply granules n bulk if required. A 1kg bag of Real Garlic Shreds can last up to 2 months for an average horse. For flies in the summer use a handful twice or three times daily although FlyFree P 35 is better.
a handful is quite a lot - and you do need less fresh garlic although i woudl say a clove isnt enough -

i read some where that you have to feed about 2 bulbs (not cloves) of fresh garlic a day to have the same afect as the little scoops that come with the dried garlic

A very knowlegable 'older' horsewoman (i mean convent taught, never married except to her horses, Miss Recyclemad, 80yr old) where i sometimes keep my horses in her paddock told me 5yrs ago to 'ditch that powdered rubbish' and give 2 fresh cloves a day in the feed. Crushing it worked better as my horse would lick around it. My shettie X had bad fly attacks before this (not sweet itch type but still rubbed) after giving him garlic for a fortnight he must have been pungent as the flys flew 3ft from him lol. The lady herself religously has a garlic sarnie everyday with olive oil, and she is well alright.............makes you wonder if that's why she isn't married lol. Tx
