i know one thing that can cause hair loss thats easily fixed
where does he get his water supply from? is it likely to have been standing a long time ?
if yes then it could be a copper defifincy some little algea bug thing luives in water and takes the copper out of it a friends horse had it her yard water came from big water towers even though it was perfectly fine it was low in copper her horse lost the hair round his neck once he was on copper supplements it grew back

i get the water from home as we have no water supply up the feild and we use buckets for him in the field the water is changed every day so has fresh every day

Could it be ring worm (infected by saddle) ? Mind you the patch you describes sounds too big. If it is, theres great stuff you can put on but you need to be careful as it can spread to humans and dogs.

Ringworm would cause the hair loss and could possibly have beed transmitted by the second hand saddles- but like Duckles says- it seems a bit quick and a bit big. Could also be a reaction to the cooling wash- is he a sensitive type? If thats the only thing thats different I would put my money on that and not use it again, could you post a pic? Brig
