(on behalf of friend with no internet)
My friends mare is very hormonal when in season, and its a lot worse this week, with the gelding on the yard.
shes normally just a happy hacker, but had to get off and walk home after a few yards today, because she was peeing all over and jogging and spinning in the middle of the road, and her rider isnt the most confident, as many of us wouldnt be in this situation.
can anyone reccomend any supplements ect to prevent this? does the NAF oestress stuff work? xx

Sorry Abi, I don't know. I have geldings now but used to have a mare and she never gave any problems. Its only natural that a mare will get a bit excited if shes in season and sees a new male horse. (They don't do it with their companions- guess they know its pointless). I would think she would calm down anyway but I suppose no harm in trying a supplement. I remember reading a vet who said that a mare shouldn't need a supplement unless she had hormonal problems (which are rare) and that all was required was positive riding. How true that is, I don't know. Easy enough to say when its not your horse! I am sure someone with a mare can give a better answer.
