Correct Jumping Strides

I have a 15.1h Section D Cob and I like to have a jumping lesson every weekend. My instructor sets out the course that I jump but I would like to try to set the some courses up by myself. What would be the correct strides approx please? for 1, 2, 3 strided doubles and combinations. How many jumps should I put up for a course (23x43 arena)?

Bounce - 3 of your strides
One stride - 7 of your strides
Two strides - 11 of your strides
Three strides - 15 of your strides

A typical canter stride is 12 feet long, which is four of your strides. You need 6 feet for landing, 6 feet for take off, which would obviously make it 4 strides, but the reason for downsizing to 3 strides is because horses find it much easier to shorten to 3 than to stretch for the longer, 4 strides which is more BSJA horse length.

Walk poles - 0.90cm apart.
Trot poles - 1.25 m apart.
Canter - 3 m apart.
One stride double - 5.5 to 6m when approached from trot and 5.5 to 7.5 when approached from canter.
A two stride double - 11 to 14 m when approached in canter.
Related four/five stride double - 18 to 25 m.
Bounce from trot - 2.75 to 3.65 m
Bounce from canter -3.65 to 4 m.

a lot depends on the stride of your horse, a larger horse needs longer distances but as Maes says it is easier to shorten than lengthen.

related distances and dog legs are trickier and you should wait until you are a bit more experianced.

again i will recommend the 101 jumping exercises by Linda Allen it has so many great exercises.

your stride needs to be measured as everyone takes a longer stride. mine is 1 metre.
