Whilst taking photos of pressure points and sarcoids and all things Basil i thought Id post these pictures re conformation. On a recent post that Dannyboy did there were all sorts of comments regarding the back end of the horse. But photos can be deceptive as the below shows- these were taken from the same distance but different angles. (Im not looking for comments on Basil here by the way- I know his faults and love him for them, but if you want to comment for practice feel free and I will respond) but to illustrate a point about taking pictures of horses for comments. theres three pics and the third is perhaps the best for comments on conformation! You will see from Pic 1 that Basil appears to have a really weak back end, in pic 2 he appears to have an enormous back end and in the final pic the truth becomes all too clear. (hope Ive put them in the correct order now! anyhow in one he has a small bum in another its huge and in the third its proportionate) Happy comparisons! PIC 1 PIC2 PIC3

Ha ha Brig, very good exercise in comparison! Basil looks absolutely lovely - and I am sooooooo jealous of your lovely barn!! I haven't got one good picture of Paco for the reasons you demonstrate, especially as he tends to slouch when just standing around. In the flesh he's well made, but you'd never know it from the pix! I've been trying to take some pix of Racaille, so that I can make the comparision later on, when he's put on some muscle. But I have the same problem - all the pix are dire. Actually, *lightbulb goes on* it's probably me that's a rubbish photographer!!

racaille tie him up and rustle some thing in you pocket, if he thinks with his tum like bern he should perk up and prick his ears if you dont tie him up and rustle some thing and he is like bern he will try eat the camera haha brig good thread, reminds me of some thing i read (maybe on fugly) about selling your horse and the pics people use, as you can imagine there were some corkers like a horse with 5 legs because there was another horse behind it etc. (oh btw in no way did i mean basil reminded me of fugly because i think he is lovely, and i too am jealous of your barn )

Fern has rubbish confirmation. Especially her back legs!
But I accept that she is never going to be a show pony, and I wasn't looking for one! You don't get a horse for next to nothing and expect them to be prefect! But she can jump, and she it perfect for what me and OH want, and I love her no matter what!

dont worry bern is pigeon toed and cow hocked and he minces when he walks and trots (as my ep and physio tell me all the time !!) although the trimming and fittening is straightening him out a bit. i think we all love our ponies warts and all

Oh yeah forgot to say that the farrier is working some magic! Apparently he is cutting her hoof at a slight angle to encourage her to stand straighter...I dont know! But he seemed pretty confident about it so go him! And also with work she looks better, she looks like a pregnant tramp at the moment and her withers were starting to dissapear! (I'm not paranoid!) lol She is a strange old donkey! Who wants 'normal' eh? lol

nothing wrong with oddbods!
sox is slightly downhill and slightly cow-hocked, never stands square and carries her tail to the right!
shes comfortable in what she does and enjoys her work- what more do we want?? x

ITs strange isnt it?- that we expect them to be perfect when actually we just want them to do the job we buy them for- Thats one of the reasons I did thhis thread- why be hyper critical about a horse unless its a serious fault that means they cant work- they come in all shapes and sizes and all colours and Id much rather have a cross legged ugly horse that was kind and able than a perfect show hunter who was a pratt! I seriously love Basil for his wonky bits because he has a lovely personality as well!

perfect conformation would mean i could not afford to buy Max so he is with me partly due to his wonky bits!! we have no intention of ever showing so unless its so bad that it will affect his health and well being sod it!!
and thats why a video is better than a photo every time!
