I'm not the best one to answer as I'm not really a fan of his methods... Just focus on getting a good relationship with both and building the trust up between you! Play games and have fun with it ...whether they're 'parelli games' or just ones u've invented! Good luck and do keep us informed on how u get on!!! (with pictures as is the rule on here!)

The only horse I ever worked with that started with Parelli methods was a sullen, grumpy, ungenerous creature who bit everyone who came near him. Our farrier says that the Parelli manual has 27 chapters: 26 of playing stupid games and 1 of sorting out the damage. Why don't you just spend a lot of time with your mare and foal, making sure that you can touch every part of their bodies, stroking, grooming, picking up feet, taking out for walks, watching in the field and catching. If you have a trailer lead the mare through it: the foal will follow. If the mare is being shod, let the foal watch and if the farrier is willing, have him pick up the foal's feet. There are loads of things you can do with the foal. He does not have to join the circus. Good luck and hugs to all three of you. Wu

only1wu, i can pick lexi(foal) feet out and also i made sure that i have got her used to being touched everywhere. As this is my first, and totally unexpected foal i am totally lost in what to do. I have read a few other comments in other sections on here and everyone has been v helpful with telling me what to do. There advice is to stay clear of parelli and mayb do monty roberts join up and follow up with mare and foal.
Thanx for your advice saza

Saza, you are doing fine. It's really hard to have an unexpected foal, but she's so lucky to have such a caring mum. I think that far too many parents of human children think that they should be "doing something" every day. In fact, they need to be babies, and need a quiet and secure environment to do that. It's the same with horses. Just let her be a baby and enjoy having her. If you treat her fairly and are always quiet and consistent with her, then she will repay you many times over. Just do the things with her that you do with her mother. More hugs and best wishes to all three. Wu

I'm with the majority on this one, not a fan of Parelli at all. I do, however use Monty Roberts Join Up with all my horses when they first come to me and I find it brilliant

I echo all of the above - don't waste your money on Parelli and then have to spend again to repair the damage, follow your heart, treat her fairly and firmly and you shouldn't go too far wrong Zx

Yep same here, Parelli is just overpriced and overglorified. 100% common sense and couldn't agree with only1wu more, just enjoy her and let her be a baby!

I don't know too much about parelli. I stopped reading about it because, as with many of these things, if you can't be committed to doing it consistently and without breaks then it just won't work or you give the wrong messages.
It sounds like you're doing just fine with your foal so be very wary of anything that may spoil it. I think join up is great, but if you bond well with your foal now you may not need to do it - it will happen naturally.
