Sprite has recently got ten times worse with an old habit. When I ask him to halt, he does, but he creeps! The minute I close down my seat and half halt with the reins he goes to a walk that is nealy a halt and then stops for a minute and slowly puts one foot then another foward.
It drives me mad and, as I am going to start doing abit of dressage really needs sorting out!
HELP!

When schooling practice your halts in front of the fence etc so he cant creep. And ensure you relax your seat to give a clear signal to him that you want a halt. He is anticipating your next command so dont rush the next movement, pat him and even sit there chatting to him or give him a mint. you will have to be patient and practice patience on him.

oh mine can bloody stop when he wants to! The thing is, he knows exactly what I want as he immediatly goes to stop, then just doesn't quite get there! It drives me mental! I seem to keep ending up pulling his teeth out (which is mean and nasty and I am a bad person) When I do stop, I sit there for quite a long time. HE really does aniticpate EVERYTHING! When I eventually get halt and ask him to stand for a little while, he assumes I'm asking for rein back and when I kick him to stop him and he goes to shoot off and then winds himself up! Then if i canter then change the rein he immediately does into canter!
Please remind me NEVER to practice a full dressage test on him or he won't need me on him as he will already know what to do!!

Suzii, Would you get as angry if he wasnt trying to please you? It would be easier to be annoyed and tell him off and correct him if he wasn't trying to please me! I always feel bad cos if I hold the contact, he goes backwards and if and kick him to stop he jumps foward and it works him up bigtime! I just don't know what to do

Halting in front of the fence is a good ploy. I also find that if you concentrate on your position and (once you've corrected that if need be) then concentrate on the aids rather than the actual halt, the halt will come. For me this seems to apply rather a lot. I become so bogged down on the result, I forget about how you actually get there.

A little bit of anticipation isnt a bad thing but it usually happens through the halt when the rider is too busy doing lots of things so the horse becomes accustomed to doing lots of things and expects to be about to do something all the time. You have to learn patience and softness and introduce a bit of boredom into your routines. you may be frying his brain. But also dont get agitated or angry or impatient with him, they know straight away and that makes them figety!
