Intrigued by the 'Parelli...on the cheap!' thread, I have afew questions about the halters...
How do they work? What do they do? Is there a special way to use one? How do you tie the knot to fasten them? And lastly, how do you measure your horse for one?
(I love my Dually but I'm open-minded to new things too, but like I've said already, I'd like to know what I'm getting into first!)

Hi Spotti, the rope halters work by exerting pressure on certain points if the horse resists or takes off. There are 2 knots on the nose band and one on each side high up on the cheek, also by being quite narrow the headpiece is more uncomforatble than an ordinary headcollar if the horses resists etc. It is similar to the Dually as you work with the same pressure release system - just much less expensive and in IMO just as effective. I tie a simple knot when i put it on (have a look at AJ's pic on the other thread). The one thing you must never do however with a rope halted is tie a horse up with one - it will not break and can cause poll damage if the horse pulls awy suddenly; I always put a traditional headcollar on to tie up. Sorry I'm not too good at explaining things in written words but hope this helps Zx
ps when I got mine they were sized as "normal" halters ie cob

I've always used a rope halter for endurance/long distance (when you keep a halter on under the bridle so that you can stop and tie up and take the bridle off). They take up less room under a bridle than a conventional halter. I NEVER use one for transport or in everyday life as they can be severe if your horse pulls back, for instance. Here's how to tie one www.getknottedropehalters.co.uk/

Thankies I don't know if we'd need one, but now I'm tempted to give them a go...might wait until we can actually do something first though!
