Do you have hills? If so walk up the hills leaning forward with a wide low rein to encourage him to put his head between his knees. He will want to trot or put his head up, this is the best way to build up the bum. In the school you need to ride lots of half halt, the pause makes them rebalance themselves with their hocks. Ask for changes of pace in the trot using the half halt lots of times before each transition.

The half halts will help you to achieve lengthened paces. He needs to shorten and learn to balance before he can lengthen. that is why he is cantering or running- he simply cant balance- the positive side is that you are getting a reaction so he is obviously genuine, so lots of half halts!!!!!!
