Right, I've been re-teaching Faith to load nicely (after a one-off accident where she stood on herself while travelling and then she would panic every time she went on the ramp) and she seems more than happy to take herself in to have her tea while there are no bars/partitions in there.
Now I know its illegal to travel without a breastbar but can you travel a horse without the partitions?
If we did this, she'd obviously be cross-tied so she couldn't turn round and get stuck and would have her hoof boots on to protect her feet from standing on herself again (!)
What do you think? Is travelling without partitions ok? What are your experiences of doing this?

I do it all the time. I have a full width breast bar (dont worry about a breach bar) and Chompy then travels stood diagonally across the trailer I only tie him to one side, whilst Brave still chooses to face straight on in the trailer, but they can spread their feet out more and balance more easily.
It also makes tacking up really easy whilst still in the trailer as you dont need to unload to get sorted as there is plenty of space to move around - great when its raining!
Have a look at the video of Brave 'Together 9 months' in the video section towards the end of the video you will see a picture of him peeking out of the trailer over the full width breast bar.
Obviously I only travel 1 at a time without the partitions, if travelling 2 then the partitions go back in.

I thought I saw a full-width breast bar in your trailer Fi I've been looking at prices etc and they don't seem too pricey so we may give one a shot...if I can ever get hold of one! (may have to order one directly from an Ifor Williams dealer )

We had a pony on loan and he didnt like travelling with the partition against him and our box's partition could only go diagonally if that makes sense. She would maybe still travel if you just took off the back bit (next to the ramp) and then she would still have the support to lean against for corners at the front. At least, I think you can do that.

We had Chip in the trailer with no partition yesterday and he was good as gold. We always had to travel Paddy without the partition cos he was way huge. We just take the partition out if needs be.

I always travel with the breast bar and no partition. THey cost about 100 euro from Ifor Williams (actually probably a lot cheaper with you - everything is dearer here). LIke Fmacg I often tack up in the trailer - its very convenient. In fact I frequently travel 2 horses without the partition- mind you they are horses who get on well. They seem to like travelling close. AND by the way, I know of several mares who won't travel with partitions but are fine without them so it could make a big difference to Faith.

If Faith likes it then thats fine- some dont want the space though so see how she travels with and then without and compare- I had horse who was only happy if he was squished in- give him space and he got very straessed but close up the partitions and munched his hay and traveled happily.

Well by the sounds of all your comments, its going to be worth atleast trying partion-less and investing in a full width breast bar and probably a breach bar too as she likes to sit back on it Not that we'll be going anywhere much anymore (due to her current retirement/playtime only scheme) but atleast we can go out for adventure walkies and see the world outside of the yard (since she does so love the great outdoors - see one of my posts on DB's "Would you consider" thread as to why she loves the outside world so much).

Travelling without a partition is fine but check the law if carrying two as ther eis something that says horses can only travel without a partition in pairs or more as long as they dont have shoes! Bizarre but Im sure its there somewhere!

Murph will travel happily with or without, my friends ex racer will not load with a partition in so has to go without.
I have only come across travelling more than one without a partition in the case of mares/foals and usually the mare is tied but foal left loose, apart from in this situation it isn't something I would personally try but thats interesting about the shoes Brig.

That is interesting about the travelling in pairs without a partition being illegal. I'm afraid to say that if that is the case I have fallen foul of the law (perhaps not the law here but I better look it up !!). I suppose they think that the 2 horses might fight and if they have shoes, they could cause a break in the wall which could mean injury and damage to other road users as well as the horses. I have to say I have done it freqently as have many I know and I have never heard of any problems but better safe than sorry I guess. Brig - how do you know these obscure laws?

Well......... Im a research bore! Until recently all taxis had to have a bale of hay in the boot and water. It got abolished about ten years ago but its a good one! The Dept of Transport will have the rules relating to transporting animals, or if not them then the Ministry of Agriculture, not sure if many police officers would know as its a bit obscure.
