Granniesboy- your post intrigues me! I have a problem in that i can beat the world as long as there is somebody watching me (Im not a show off and not competitive) I think I feel that I let myself down if I dont show i can do it but if Im on my own I back off from doing things if they seem a little daunting. so for example Id never do a show jumping course if I was on my own schooling but if someone says, "can you get on and show me how to do it"- no problem and no nerves! I may try your approach and take the feeling that Im being watched and use it in situations where i would normally back off! Thanks!
I also think that having kids DOES seriously have an affect on nerves and confidence. theres more to lose and unless we ride for a living its no longer a necessity so biologically why should we do it? I think twice and thrice now in situations where I would have never given thought to previously.

Brig, that rings such a bell with me. Not that I am in your riding league or anything, but yes I can identify with that bit about being watched. When I am watched I do "try harder" as in use my legs more, think what I am doing with my hands more, get a bit braver and most importantly stop panicking. I have a tendency to really panic if Ronan attempts (in my mind) to rear, but if I have company I will kick him on strongly and even raise my voice at him... The bit about kids is so right too, I wasn't riding when I had my son, only took it up again when he was 4 but there is no doubt, you do tend to think, "what if......" Even the practical things like "who will take him to school or wash his school clothes if I am laid up?" Granniesboy, I hope this is the turning point for you and your horsey, clearly you aren't nervous, maybe some visualisation or "pretend " will sort it. Good luck... ;D

Sorry if this is a repeat as haven't read all posts (v rude of me i know!)
I find what inspires and motivates me the most when I am in a bit of a confidence rut, I find imagining in my head what I want to do and how great it would be etc is great. It makes me feel like I can do it and then leads me to think of things I could do to get me there.
