hi...
now i love hacking, for me, its what riding is truly about. so i was very happy wen i was told kalib is fine in traffic, and has not even batted an eyelid at the dustbin removal trucks! so i was very surprised wen riding next to the road one day, when a big lorry came past, he started jogging up and down, very tense and trotting off... now he's a big horse...not strong and he is so light in the mouth, i hardly need to do anything in the school... but i discovered i had no breaks wen the lorry came past, and its very scary...
i told the owner, and she was very surprised..
any advice/comments? im now not the most confident hacker... xxxx

I shouldn't really give advice on confidence as I am currently the most terrified rider ever! But...the same/similar thing happened to us at the beginning of september - except it was a car that came zooming up behind us, scared my horse who bolted up the road and wouldn't stop until we turned to face the brick wall at the very end of the road (narrowly missing a learner dirver, who was parked...thank god) and the driver then sped off up a sideroad and didn't even seem to realise just how much trouble he'd caused......idiot.
Anyway, breathing and singing and talking to your horse help, as does doing groundwork with them (perhaps lead him inhand past a lorry, to show him its not really scary?!?).
Like I said, completely the wrong person to give advice, but you're not alone (let me know what helps because I'd like to try it too!)

im guessing the lorry came passed without stopping in which case it was probley the noise my flash is 110% at everything but hates lorries coming behind her so i always turn her to look at it once she's seen it she is better , still tenses up but doesnt move you could try that or go out it company will give both of you more confidence

Easier said than done but you need to give the reins so the horse doesnt feel the need to pull against them- get a balance/mammy strap and grab hold of that if you need to- if you grab the horses mouth all your tension and worrys transmit to them. then as Spotti says, talk, sing etc so you keep breathing! brig

Huge hug. Was that on the 37? Hated that road with a passion. Blake is pretty much bombproof but even he played up there. Ditto what the others have said really, but I'm sure if you tell J and M your worries they will help you

wow! hi tina! yeah it is...i really hate it as well, even when riding candy, i wasnt relaxed... do you think i should just ride on the actual road bit, therefore forcing veichles to slow down? because when he does spook, i have barbed wire to the left of my leg, and i kinda like my leg unmessed up! xxx

Personally no I don't think you should be on the road there, they come round that corner far too fast and at least on the wide verge you're not going to get hit.
Have you tried going out with something that is truely not bothered by the speed they go there? Not sure who's left up there but Mia says she's full so there might be something.

Would you try leading in hand for a while until he's more used to the traffic? Its hard for any horse in heavy traffic and they so easily pick up the slightest hint of nerves. I have had 2 horses who were bad in traffic and I was always told to make them go on etc in hindsight i wish i had got off and led at trouble spots and reassured the horses. Back then, despite a lot of bad experiences, i was not the slightest bit nervous in traffic myself and felt that the horses would get better in time and with repitition. However I now see that i was only making them do something that frightened them instead of trying to make traffic less frightening. The more the horse knows and trusts you, the easier he will find all these things and I have found leading in hand very helpful (although practise elsewhere first if your horse is un used to it). Brigadier and Maximum and a few others are very keen on long reining and I am sure it would really help with road work and with trust etc. I am hoping to learn it myself. Traffic is really the bane of hackers' lives. Good luck anyway.

Big deep breaths then I think, trust in him that he's not going to do anything wrong. It might be if you are nervous he's picking up on that, why not try and get out early one sunday when there is nothing on that road so the pressure is off a bit.

If it's only that bit of road ur tense on ask a friend to drive with hazards on behind or infront of you for that stretch. That way you can feel confident that nothing is suddenly going to wizz past you and you can both get happier having cars behind you again.

Unfortunately on that stretch of road it would be impossible, I know it very well myself and the problem comes because it is a 60 MPH limit and you come out of the yard after a bend so to have a car driving slowly would cause a problem (there have already been accidents there with people turning in and out of the yard in cars). I'd bring Blake over if I though it would help hun, but as I said he's 100% normally but hates that bit as well

oh no! That's such a shame. I really don't know what to suggest then as my usual of leading or longreining are prob just gonna end up with even more problems! Is there a donkey somewhere near that u could pay someone to ride out with u? Is there no way to avoid it?
If only car drivers had some sense or consideration for others life would be sooo much easier!?!
