A group of horse people from North and South of the border got together recently and decided to get people out riding and competing despite the ecomony going pear shaped. They invented a 'credit crunch competition' which is called Cross Challenge. There are 5 competitions (in different venues) and 3 classes (roughly 80cm, 90cm and 1m) in each. competitors ride one round of show jumps and straight away head off on a x country cross course. It is not timed but all those with double clears get a rosette. You don't have to be a member of anything to compete. There is a big prize fund for the final and to be eligible you have to compete in final and 3 others but you don't have to go clear in any (bar the final) to be eligible . The price is £20 or 22 euro. Its meant to be cheap, easy, fast and encouraging and the first competition was today. I had been hoping to compete but for various reasons couldn't but ended up doing entries and scoring. (well finding who was clear to give them their rosettes) THere was a good crowd and a great atmosphere. Two well known eventers turned up with a load of young horses. There were as many men as woman. There was a lot of x country clears but very few show jumping clears. Eventing it is not, but then again, it is an awful lot cheaper and I think it would be a great learning experience for a novice horse. In these recessionary times, it was a nice boost

sounds like it was great fun... I'd almost be tempted to do the 80cm class if it was closer...

Ah yes I saw that advertised in the Farm Week. It sounds like a good idea! If they would maybe do a 50cm class it would be even better ;D Are you going to any of the other ones duckles or are they too far away? It would be nice to go and see one of them maybe.
