Lately Fire has been giving me a really hard time when jumping. I've moved the jumps around and lowered them, and he has been cantering sideways over them, taking off over them, When I've tried to slow him leaping around. Generally making me feel nervy. OH reckoned Fire was feeling bored and told us to come round over the one bigger sized jump on the course Which he did lovely. OH then put it up and Fire soared over it beautifully, He really enjoyed it. So will try testing this theory this week...

shhh!!! We mustn't let him know This is a vid from last Sun, He felt like he was going faster than it looks. It was also the time he did it all the best believe it or not...He had been leaping round in the air over the little red one at the start, then when I turned him away trying to drag me over the nearest jump. He did some good sideways cantering in front of the blue Big jump, behaved well on the approach, had a good rythem and jumped lovely. Me? Naughty? ...never Its like he has all this energy, and he either wants to use it over fences, go really fast, and if I try to slow him he likes to go sideways and leap around.

I think you are really brave to jump in quite an open field! Perhaps you could use really tricky grids to make him use his energy jumping rather than going fast and being scary?

Thats really funny, I'd be more worried about jumping him in a fenced arena! I like the freeing feeling of wide open spaces, so if we do get into a pickle, We can scarper across the feild and not crash into a fence! (although with how we use the field generally, you'd think it had an imaginary fence) Gridwork sounds a really good idea, thanks Flea. When I used to do it with him he'd really enjoy it. Put that naughty pony's mind to something constructive ;D ;D

Cant seem to play your vid for some reason but the photo looks good. Some horses really do prefer bigger jumps and combinations to test their brains. He looks intelligent so as long as you dont push him too hard or overface him then you should get some good results. Your jumps look nice BTW!

Much as I hate to say it - The OH is probably right!
Fire probably needs the bigger jumps to back him off and make him think.

ssshhh...he mustn't know he's right Don't worry, I won't overface him, I am a snivelling coward and do have fear of big jumps! I'd be happy as larry if he'd pop the little ones nicely. I've started using some small grids to encourage him to slow up and use what little brains he has ;D
