Today I had an awful schooling session. I've been doing lots of long and low walk and trot to build up Zoon's muscle again now his bloods are back to normal after a virus. The weight has gone back on thanks to DR green grass but he has lost all his topline. Today Zoon decided that long and low was boring and that sticking his head very high and jogging everywhere was extra fun So after getting rather frustrated I decided to stop - frustration and horses is a bad mix. so I walked him round the yard to cool off (we're on a massive yard!) He doesn't hack alone and naps for england, and today decided as we were walking PAST the front gate that I was going to ask him to go out of it and stopped dead and refused to go forward. After about 20mins and a few rears later I got off and lead him quietly out of the gate and back again (I had to prove a point - that it wasn't going to eat him!) I remounted and rode him out and back. I did this about 4 or 5 times until he was calmly going out on a long rein.. Then I decided to try my luck - I rode him out and about 100 yards up the road, turned him around at a cross roads and rode back. That was my massive achievement for the day and I ended on a good note so smiling a lot ;D

Well done! I take my hat off to you knowing that you needed to stay calm - I get very frustrated and the more I fuss the more his nibs prats around, of course. ;D

In a few days time I'm planning to go a few yards further! Its very tempting to do it tomorrow but I've tried everything with this horse except slowly slowly so maybe that's the answer

Deffo the answer Zoon- sounds a bit like mine- he naps a bit but I think if I made too much of an issue he would give me a battle so I keep calm and just quietly ask over and over until he gives in. Bit like my hubby really!!!!! Brig
ps well done re the schooling session- sometimes its best to walk away and try another day!

I love to hear about these kinds of things -when ppl have the good sense and care enough to get off and solve a problem *with* the horse rather than beat it on or give up and go home. Ur a credit to us all, Zoon! Have karma.

well done matey!! bit by bit is always best!
A friend of mine had a mare that stopped at the gate and refused to go any further...she woudl even lie down rather than step outside the gate - the girl tried everything and one day, she thought she would just sit and wait. 5 hours. she chatted to her hubby, had a cup of tea or two...
The horse after 5 hours started off up the road...they went a mile and came back again and have never had the problem since!!
