Took Toby to do the 60cm SJ class at Sutton Bonnington yesterday. Thought it would be a nice easy show for his first time out in a year. Toby thought it was too easy! He warmed up nicely, pinging the 2f6 warm up fence. Thought I'd have a really good round, not win but would be fluent and a confidence booster ready for next month. Especially because the fences weren't massive. More about 40cm! Got into the ring and I swear he grew by about a hand, the bell went and we flew straight into the first with a squeal and a snort and he had about jumped me off! Turn for the second which was a double, he flew the first part but he ducked to the left right at the last second and I flew quite dramtically to the right! But no worries, stewards said I could carry on although would not be allowd to the JO (that was fine by me) So i came back to the double and he was perfect, we went over as a team and with him listening, turned up th ring towards the gate and he just bolted! straight for the wall and then on to a related distance to a nice upright, got over both clean, if a little fast and then nearly went through the ring barrier. I retired there bcause it was quite frankly dangerous. But i learnt that we need to jump more on grass and both to be more consistant. The pros were that I know now that we get it right then it feels so good and we'r both capable of a lot more and i'm now ready and alot more aware of what I need to work on.

Well done you That all sounds quite terrifying to me but at least you say you know what to work on. Hope the next one goes better for you both.

Well done for giving it a go, can you put jumps out in the field at home to practice?
I'm sure next time will be better, but also maybe he needs something a little bigger to jump to keep his mind on the job.

Well done - the first show jumping round with a new horse is nearly always a diaster- (yours doens't sound too bad) then it gets better and better and then really good. i think you were right to start small even if bigger jumps are easier for him. Looking forward to hearing about your next outing

Ha ha, that's the thing about horses - they are full of surprises! Glad you are not hurt though!
