went to a show yest with sam. Misse the in hand coloured class which i was gutted at. But thn put him into in hand cob. Sam didnt place which i thought he would do, but had some good critisism from the judge. Went and asked him how i could get placed nxt time, and he said that the cobs tht were there (about 10 in the class) were nothing special but werre nothing crap, they were all good cobs, and i was very close to being placed, but he asked if i rode sam alot which i do and he said that was the problem that he swings his bum when he moves and that let him down. So question how can i improve that? or stop him swinging his bum from side to side? Oh and sam is only 4. But was good show and was experience for us both

Why is swinging bad? I thought it would be good, showing nice free movement in the back. As you can see I no nothing about showing. Well done for giving it a try and asking why you were not placed. Great attitude.

Good idea on asking why you werent placed! I took princess in the in hand coloured pony last year and of course she was the only heavier pony! Didnt get placed unfortunately.

I wouldn't worry too much about his comment. I can't see what he said could be classed as a fault though but eh each judge is different and it's only their opinion at the end of the day. If your pony is happy and working correctly then don't try and change it just because of one person's opinion who only got to see your horse being trotted up. It's good to ask for feedback at the end of the class but be careful as some people get really worked up by judges comments and take drastic measures to get there horse/pony working how they think the judge would like to see them. There's lots of other shows out there and different judges so just go out there and enjoy yourself. Well done you for having a go and any chance of a piccy?

thanks for the comments. It was good to get some feedback but im not the type of person that will go out my way to go change someting if it is working well to start with. Yep there will be a nxt time at some point and with the spring grass sam is working really well now not so lazy anymore hence we had some temper tantrums the other day cause i was asking him to do a full lap round the school in canter on his bad rein!
Just off up to yard now so will post some pics later and Mossh needs to give the fotos that her OH took of me too at the show!

Were the rest of the cobs in the class 'hairies' or were they the trimmed and hogged type? High level cob showing, they are trimmed and hogged. Sam is beautiful, however if the judge is used to judging at county level for example he may just have a preference to the trimmed type. I notice the same thing in coloured classes - with such a mixture of animals, the placing tends to be on the preferance of the judge - ie either the finer types or the traditional hairy heavies. Well done for having a go, and as long as Sam enjoyed himself (and you) and behaved thats the main thing at his age. Looking forward to the pics
