I've got a 15'2 coloured cob, around last summer he started being rather naughty on the lunge i.e he would just set his neck and run off... I had back/teeth etc look at so nothing wrong there! I then got in contact with a girl who used to loan him around 7yrs ago who said they always had problems like they would get him in the school go to lunge he would run off so they would take him back to the yard and turn him out! I've now managed to sort the problem out and he lunges quiet well for him lol.. My main question is he has no idea of what working long and low is, how can I get him to work proper through his hind quarters and long and low? I'm going to invest in a Pessoa at the end of the month but am not sure how he will take to it, so any ideas on what else I can do? Oh yeah I need to be able to do all this by lunge work as at present I do not have a GP saddle I can school in, have only got a western saddle!

Ive never used a pessoa but am told they are marvellous for your sort of problem.
However horses generally put their head up because they are not using their back end properly, then when they do they become unbalanced. For that reason I would say use side reins. Aerborn do some that are entirely elastic and they work really well, the horse can still flex etc but is guided into the position you need to help them work better. Also work him at a pace he is comfortable with and ensure he understands a half halt on the lunge, ask him to steady and slow down and then quicken, do plenty of this so he is having to adjust his weight onto his hocks. This exercise can take time to achieve but as youre not riding at the moment then it will keep his work varied. Anything you do now on the lunge will pay off later when you ride.

I've found him quiet unbalanced when you ask for a trot to canter transition, he has got better with it lately though so I think I am finally getting some where with him!
Problem is when I got him just over a year ago he hadn't been schooled for well over 2 years was just hacked out once or twice a month! Where would I put the side reins? on the side of the roller ( where the girth straps would be )? I have tried this before and he never accepted it just went round quiet tense with his head in the air?!
I really wanna sort this out as want to hopefully do some dressage with him once his ready and going nicely!
Sorry if I sound stupid I've never been one for schooling etc before so am learning as I go along, have always been a happy hacker untill now!

We lunge in a gogue here (a 'de gogue' for you, I think) which can help a lot. The benefit of them is that you can vary the 'triangle', ie really loose to start with, and the horse can choose where he puts his head within that triangle. It does encourage the horses to lower their heads, without forcing.

The pessoa is the dogs dangly bits- you will never regret buying it and is ideal for the way you want your horse to work. Have you considered lunging him with 2 reins and working towards long reining? it will give him some variety and you can influence his way of going far more than while simply on the lunge.

I've tried long reining him twice before. The first time he was a star the second however he had a massive strop tried to run away with me and got him self tangled in the lines! ( This was mainly down to he wanted to go out so went nuts ) I am happy to try this again though as he was such a dream the first time I tried.

Small update on the coloured pony!
I tried long reining him the other evening and he was a star, I have also changed the bit I use. He is going so much nicer starting to drop his head ( only for 2/3 strides but a start me thinks ) his transitions are getting even better aswel. :-)
Am very proud of the pony right now!

glad its going well. Harry (who didnt have the foggiest even at 16 what lunging was although I suspect he was lunged when broken as it did kind of twig one day!) has recently progressed to two reins; one going behind his bum - at first he objected rather strongly to having it round his bottom (and you may well want to get him used to that sensation before trying a pessoa). It has helped harry a fair bit, making him think about his bottom a bit more - you can also imiitate correct contact on the bit then too...

how wonderful!! its great to hear the update so thanks for that!
ccj- i always get them used to that feeling with a bit of baler twine over the bottom and round the hocks in the stable= learnt from bitter experiance! lets say pony did not stop galloping for a long time and i had a heck of a walk to catch him, still I was only a teen then so a bit fitter!

Another update for you guys! Long reined Sunday during the day and it didn't quiet go to plan! He threw a massive strop at being brought in during the day to be long reined resulting in him kinda hurting me and him falling over Despite his massive strop and me being slightly in pain ( am worse today ) I pushed him through the naughtiness and got some lovely work out of him in the end! Horses why'd we have them some times?! lol...
