Noticed that Kieran has started coughing when cantering. Any ideas why? He is fed haylage and horse and pony cubes - stabled on shavings mixed with allbed www.allbed.ie/ He is stabled at night time and goes out every day.

Hmm usually would have said straw bed/unsoaked hay but obviously they don't apply. Is it only when he canters?

Is it the clearing the throat kind of cough- like he does it a few times and then stops or is it a hacking cough that he keeps up?

Its like a wheeze almost but it stops - it only really happens once, although I havent really kept track. I just noticed that he coughs sometimes in canter - its not every canter though.

Could be a number of things Flea, has he been vetted? One of the checks is their breathing after exercise. If this was ok thrn sou.nds like some dust may be affecting him or similar

Yes, he was lunged at canter and then breathing checked - no problems there. Maybe shavings are just a bit dusty or something.

Has he been wormed recently? Worms can cause a little cough with exercise.

If the vet cleared him and he only coughs occasionally, it does sound more like an allergy or irritation - I was going to say monitor it but I guess you are doing that already!!
