I had another jumping lesson this morning which seemed to go much better than last weeks. I had longer to warm up by myself so had time to do more trotting and cantering whilst standing. Ouchy Anyway, she had me working on a grid of 4 crosspoles set as bounces then a stride and another crosspole. We started with the first 4 as poles on the ground and gradually built up the number of jumps. Apparently my position was much better this week so thanks for all the advice. My big problem was tensing up just before going over the first either pole or jump. She said she wished she had a camera as I had my eyes closed and my teeth gritted From the sounds of it I could have given Deefa a run for her money in gurning. We did finish on a good note though as I managed to relax much more, keep a more balanced position and it felt as though everything just flowed. Oh, and I managed not to put my hands on his neck at all

Jumping with your eyes closed heh? Well done you! Oh, wasn't it intentional? By coincidence I was watching a lesson this morning in which the dwarves - sorry, kiddies - were jumping. These were six year old beginners on sh!tties, sorry, shetties. They were going over miniscule cross poles in either trot or canter, whichever they could manage. I was thinking about them bouncing around and their washing line reins but I do see a point: if you start all that stuff early it is not something you have to 'build up to', which becomes frightening.

... but to get back to therapy, I needed some today, although not jumping. I've been so very poorly that I haven't managed to take much advantage of this fabulous weather and then today everybody snapped at me so I thought: I need therapy. I worked the boy in the arena a bit but the dust wasn't good for my horrendous cough (it's the quitting smoking that has made me ill .... ) so then went for a plod around in the sunshine, admiring the almond blossom fluffing up everywhere. Paco being Paco was an @rse in the arena, but once we were out he went lovely and round and really started to listen so we did some nice lateral work zigzaging up and down the lanes. I felt much better afterwards. Although I still hate the world.

Aww Rac dont hate the world- just the a*seholes who annoy you- not us of course we are all lovely!
they do say thats theres something about the outside of a horse thats good for the inside of a (wo)man so I prescribe more gentle hacks and get that Fishermans Friend to work!

Hope you're feeling better soon Racaille. Giving up smoking is the best thing I ever did (well almost) and I've now gone a year without the evil weed. I did resort to hypnotherapy and NLP though. Now, it's my turn to prescribe keeping up with the therapy and avoid evil dwarves.

Hmm I am afraid I am still guilty of the ol smoking lark Mind you I think if I attempted a bounce grid I'd need a whole packet! I think I've only ever done a bounce once and it was the wierdest feeling in the world. Didn't like it one little bit!

Yes, I can safely say I am an addict now and will have to keep sneaking in more lessons whilst I can. I will let you know if I end up like John Wayne, hee hee. What's happened to Ronansmum? She's showing as a guest. Oh, I forgot to say I'm glad it wasn't like Charliekips recent jumping experience

Kitkat- this thread is bringing home to me my real need of therapy!!! Keep the details coming, Racaille- your lungs are cleansing themselves of all that nicotine and making you healthier and if you feel like thumping me when reading this- I completely understand. When I gave up smoking and had bad bronchitis- that's what everyone said to me and it wasn't one bit helpful!!

well done kit, just wondering if you have moved RS as we don't hear anything about Ryan these days? I've started having lessons at the RS where I go hacking. Interestingly this is where I first had lessons 4 years ago. I changed RS for a number of reasons: - I came off Ryan once too often in a short space of time and lost my confidence a bit on him. So I decided not to ride him again until I could ride in daylight as he got very spooky in a floodlight school. (I've since heard that he has started bucking to get people off not just high spirits and sorting his legs out). - They gave me a different instructor that I just didn't click with. Don't get me wrong, she was lovely, but I didn't come away with that 10 foot tall feeling anymore. - They changed to only open late once a week so I had to have a semi private lesson with 2 people i really did not like who did not want to learn but just flopped around. - I started riding Cavalier on hacks and wanted to learn to ride him better as he was very strong at the time. - I am having lessons with my sister which is a hoot. I did leave on good terms so I can go back if i want and may well pop back this summer.

I used to have lessons with my sister years ago, it was brilliant, we could discuss everything endlessly for hours- horses, people, our riding skills, which men looked good in jodphurs, our riding positions etc,you know the stuff that drives most people bored silly. - she used to even draw cartoons of the place (she is very good at art) - it was so much fun. Never enjoyed lessons in quite the same way after she gave up (well, she actually moved to another part of the country and rode somewhere else)

You are very lucky to have a sister to go riding with, I have three bros and not one likes horses. You know whats the best cure for jumping nerves/tension don't you? more jumping lessons/therapy! Well done with your lesson.
