Carrying on from Zara's thread about calmers, I gave Brave his 1st portion of Naf Magic (recommended by my neighbour) last night and OMG this morning he is like a different horse. We hacked up his scary route on a long rein and I even felt confident enough to have a canter with him in the stubble field, previously every time we have set foot in there we have had dancing, prancing, snorting, and spinning and it has been an effort to control him in walk. But today he was soft and listening, we walked, trotted, cantered and then back to walk then canter then walk and yes he was onward bound but he was sooo responsive. we then came home and usually again I have to be constantly leg yielding him or doing some form or lateral work to keep his mind on the job and not prancing about the road but again I just had a nice realxed trot up the road. Brought him back in put his rug on (still not that warm up here) Chomps and Dexter were still in, then jumped back on board and rode him bareback down to the field. And... Amazingly, not once, did he shout and normally he shouts his head off, even when I turned him you he gave a half hearted whinny as if to say where is everyone, but it was not one of his ear splitting cries. When I brought Chomps and Dexter down he mossied over said hello and again no panics... it truley does work as even yesterday he was still wound up...

Ceej - yes it is magnesium based. Duckles, no idea if it is better than what Zara is using, but it does seem to have a dramatic effect and my neighbour swears by the stuff for her previously very very stressy mare, hence the reason why I tried it. It's not cheap though about £25 for 1kg or £60 for 3kg but the bigger size is supposed to last 120 days... I got mine from www.vetuk.co.uk it arrived within 24 hours and was cheaper than anywhere else I could find.

Thanks Fi- I think I might give it a go- saw what you said about soil testing, might ask the yo first if land ever tested before I go looking for a kit but wouldn't surprise me if it is deficient in minerals as it is very poached and I don't think fertilized for yonks. I have noticed that Cori definitely gets totally crazy as some times of the year more than others which would/could tie in with a mineral dificiency- will try it anyway and let you know. He 'shouts' an awful lot and is very stressy- thanks

I know this may sound a silly question but...
Are they still the same horse but just calmer or are they a ‘different horse’?
I know this may sound a bit weird, I just wondered as I love major and his cheeky ways and if he gets a bit of a nutter in the summerit may be something I look at but I wouldnt want himto change character!
Just wondered is all ;o)

I know what you mean, after only one day I would say that they are just calmer, Brave is not subdued as if he has been sedated, but the panics and the tenseness that he sometimes has just wasn't there this morning. For Brave this is not just a summer thing it has been year round and you will see in Zara's thread that I know my soil is low in magnesium and every horse I have ever brough here has gone loopy, some like Chompy and Dexter seem to be able to get what they need from the feed but for Brave, well he has gradually been getting worse and I thought I would give this a try to see if has an effect. Brave has been like Major was for you the other day constantly for the last couple of months and whilst I can get him to listen in the school, hacking out alone was difficult and even in company he would panic if Chompy took a dislike to something and it would take me a while to get his concentration back.
Fingers crossed he will also get over his flower pot issue now and I wont have to enter the dressage arena in reverse!

I had freinds with the same problem ( also over your way Fi) and they found that just adding plain magnesium worked wonders and was an awful lot cheaper.

fimacg thats amazing! really pleased for you. Regarding brands of calmer i think it is worth finding the one that suits your horse as although they are magnesium based some have other different ingredients. Just how much of a difference this makes i don't know but i had AJ on NAF Magic for 3 months and didn't notice a lot of difference however he was still at his old yard and his general behaviour was still v bad! I think the answer is to try it and see what happens, i keep a diary of what AJ's done and his behaviour and i find this helps.
Good luck everyone with spooky, nervy or challenging poppo's! Zx

PS neighlass, AJ is still him self and not subdued in any way just less of a handful and more pleasant to be around and to ride.
Maxi - I haven't tried pure Mg but might give it a go when i run out of what i'm using Zx
