Ok! Well I am thinking as a goal, I would like to have a go at the beginners dressage test in the summer months and am wondering what colours to go for? Of course Major is a grey and I lurve tweed and all his tack is brown. I would have loved to get a brown hat, tweed coat, bream joddies and brown boots but the hat things is stumping it as there arent many about and the ones that are are very expensive! Should I just go for tweed with black hat and boots and obviously his brown leather tack? I know I am ages off it happening but I like to plan in advance Would brown not be the best colour for Major anyway with himbeing grey? Your advice please?

I dont think it matters too much at the lower levels but of course you want to be looking your best! I know I do! ;D I wouldnt splash out on a brown hat - actually there are lots of people who wear navy and black hats with tweed. Here are some ideas: rehorses.com/tweeds.htmlTweed is really for showing. Traditionally, dressage clothing is navy/black jacket, and white jodphurs - i think stocks look better for dressage than ties but ties are totally acceptable at lower levels and look smart too. Showjumping is much the same really. Still, as long as youre smart, being dressed in tweed wont matter at all.

I thought it had to black/navy for dressage with cream/beige/white jodhs? I could be wrong. Tweed is lovely but I've only ever seen it with a black or navy hat- in fact I have never seen a brown hat (I have a restricted life!!) Mind you, my black hat is fairly weather beaten and I was asked where I got my lovely 'brown' hat. So you could wear your black hat out in the rain for a few months to get the 'brown' look!!! If Major is a gray, he will look stunning with the tweed/brown look but would look great with black or navy as well. Well done on planning to do a dressage test so quickly- you'll have loads of fun getting Major ready for the day. Have you sussed out the best shampoos for grays??? And what about his tail? Only saying this as a friend of mine has a beautiful gray and she is obcessive about his tail, I think she has tried everything to get it perfectly white, bleach, milton's baby fluid, etc etc

Yes - i agree about the tail thing!!! I have no idea how people get white tails white!! They must wash them a few times a week or something! We put dung away/coat whitener in the tail before we wash and then do it with shampoo and its still yellow!

Well firstly Brown hats do exist they are just a bit expensive! I think it is Charles & Owen? who do them. I have one already but like yours, it used to be black and has faded! It came with Major so really I need another... As I plan on doing some in hand showing later in the year I would like to get a jacket which I can use for both! The black is ok but the Tweed (IMO) looks better. As for getting Major clean - I darent think about it!! He can be clean - here is a pic of him in his show days... I will see how things pan out but I am already thinking of working on his tail as I think it could take a while - I could plait it to keep it clean??!!!

Tweed tends only to be for native and huter style classes, but as someone said lower levers it will be fine. As for getting a white pony, i hear elbow grease is great! milton would work though and its nice and mild, make sure you rinse though, plus if bathing the night before rug and bandage everwhere possible to avoid poop strains

The tweed will be fine if you need to get one that does both.
Black hat and balck boots are more correct but at the lower levels it will not matter too much unless you go blue or pink or some such ridiculous colour! If you do end up eventing at RC and PC level you will wear tweed for the dressage section anyway! if you do want to go down the brown hat why not get a brown velvet cap cover?
Re the tail you can get stuff old ladies use on their blue rinses called 'Touch of silver' it comes out the bottle purple but it is truly amazing stuff and my old grey looked pure white with it- be careful I left it on for a bit to really let it work and we went a lovely shade of pale lilac!!!

NL I was alarmed at what you said about your 'hat coming with Major'. I hope I have misunderstood and this is just a hat you don't use. PLEASE if there is one bit of kit that you HAVE to get right it's your helmet: it needs to be fitted for YOU and any helmet that is second hand is IMO already too old. They degrade with age, wear and tear, bangs and knocks etc. NL this is VITAL. I want you to take it very very seriously. Your head is very precious and needs protecting - even a small knock can have devastating effects. When you come off - you WILL come off one day - you need your head to have maximum protection. Go buy yourself a good helmet and yes they can be expensive but what price your brain, eh? I change my helmet every two years if it seems in good condition but if I fall on my bonce I change it immediately. I use an American Troxel Legacy Gold as they have great safety conformity and are very lightweight and ventilated (essential here) but go for what ever pleases you. But it must be new and it must be fitted for you. PLEASE.

I think Champion do a brown hat which would be about £90 and conforms to the relevant safety standards.
