ive never really used a solocomb but borrowed a friends to tidy up the ends of my mare's mane the other day, and she hates being pulled (understandably)
but its really bushy now, i seemed to have thinned it about half its past thickness with solocomb and pulling, but its sticking up at right angles, and refusing to lay flat, which is driving me nuts!
is there a good way to thin using a solocomb? the mane is still about three times the thickness of a TB's! xx

My friend uses one of these on her horses tails (rather than get booted across the yard with pulling them) and they look great. I would def recommend one of these.

Eugh solo combs need banning!!!
Get a metal mane comb and pull it!!! That'll thin in nicely!

I hate solocombs too. Only used it once myself and found it took as much time as pulling and horse didn't like it. However I know a good few people who use them for their horses with thick manes - they can make them look bushy. Try the clippersharp thing, its tempting me (although I don't mind pulling now) and is being added to my enormous wish list of horse things i don't absolutely need. Pity it couldn't do the tail as well.

clipper sharp do have ones for tails, they do a great job, and much quicker than pulling if you have a thick bushy tail

Pity it couldn't do the tail as well. My cob crushed someone against a wall whilst trying to solo comb her mane... yet i was fine to pull it! And so was someone else who pulled it too. Luckily for me i quite enjoy pulling manes, and am quiet happy to stand there all day if necessary getting the horse used to it and neatening it all up (perfectionist!) and i do have pics of Gem after pulling her mane, but theyre unfortunately on my phone, and until i get my new phone on saturday (i think) i cant put them up...

I tried to pull Ronan's mane last night for the first time since I got him - November, so as you can imagine it is quite long and tatty looking. But it isn't bushy, just long. But it is torture to pull, I back combed it and pulled but believe me, not a single strand came out. So what do you recommend for that pleaae? Just something that will shorten and tidy his mane without thinning it. He didn't seem to mind me tugging at him, but it was a complete waste of time.

ronan, if possible id get him really warm. Also, what sort of comb are you using? Something like this is what i use, i actually have this comb somewhere but i mainly use one with a wooden handle. www.sporthorseproducts.com/images/pulling-comb-with-pick.jpgIt does need to be a metal comb. Again, not sure of your method, but back comb the hair, take small strands at a time and wrap it around the comb and pull. - Its a much easier method than the older method of wrapping it round your finger to pull it out!

i use a solo comb and it seems to work perfectly for me though i must admit it took a few goes to find the correct technique i cant do manes with comb i always do it with fingers which end up cut and sore which is why i switched to solo comb i use an old clipper blade though for just a light thinning just comb it thru the mane
