I was out walking willow the other day and thought, cor how lovely it would be just to hop on his back for 1/4 mile or so.
He is 25-28 (real age unknown) and altough healthy he is not as spritely as he once was. He is 13.2, barefooted and I am just under 9 stone. Woudl it be too much pressure on his old back for me to hop on board for a bit? It is all the weight in one area and I retired him off because it wasnt fair to be hacking out properly but he does like going up the road... (but i do so hate walking!!)
Is there maybe a pad and surcingle I could use?
What do you recon? I should get off my fat bottom and walk?!

If he's fit and healthy I can't see why not and you weigh nothing! You could try a bareback pad maybe? I think horses are very good at telling us if we are in the wrong and I'm sure if you try he will tell you whether or not he is comfortable with it?

I wouldn't think you're too heavy at all especially if just walking up road. Different matter if it was a day's hunting or something!

Well I backed Blue (an 11h New Forest(ish) pony) and she seemed fine with me on her back. I weight just short of 8 stone, so kind of the same ratio really. TBH, I did feel her hollow her back slightly when I got on bareback, but that could have been because she wasn't used to a rider...she seemed more than happy to have me onboard when in a saddle though. I'm sure Willow would let you know if he didn't want you on him

I dont think I am generally too heavy for him, its just because it will be bareback and coz he's getting on a bit

My friend owns a 15.2hh tb mare whos roughly 30... if i showed you a pic of her you'd be shocked that shes still happily being ridden. My friend is probs a little on the heavy side, probs around 12st, but shes gone off on loan to another girl now.
