Loui has a really annoying habbit of pulling the rains out of my hands!! i have tried everything from softening my hands, loosening my rains and now i ride her in a standing martingale to see if she will get that she's pulling herself and not my arms out of my sockets! Ive been riding her in it for just under a month and still she hasnt twigged! has anyone got anyother ideas that i can use as my shoulders are now feel like an oap's!

hmmm - have you had the usual checks done i.e. teeth, tack? if those are OK it could be bad habit - and re-schooling required have you tried lunging with side reins? Jo Barry (big dressage person up here) gave me a lesson a few years ago she ended up putting a stretchy exercise bandage over Fig's poll down through the bit rings then tied the ends together over his neck by the pommel of the saddle so that he was pulling against himself. This did help stop him leaning and pulling the reins from me that way Try it and see if it make a difference. he he also liek the fact that you have shoulders like and Old age Pensioner after these antics

I've ridden a club horse like this - it's really annoying, isn't it? We've never totally cured him but he is better. If he stands still he insists on having long reins and out hacking he's better with loose reins than a strong contact, but he will work OK in the arena now.
Fi's plan made me think of lunging him - or even riding him - in a gogue. It makes a triangle from the poll to the bit to somewhere in front of his chest - you can regulate the length, but the beauty of it is that the horse is free to move his head within this triangle, up and down, but it is not comfortable for them to stick their nose out because they are pulling against themselves.
Might be worth a try. Decathlon sell cheapies and they are IMO better than the more expensive ones as they have a buckle at the poll, not a stud, which always breaks.

Horses tend to snatch when the rein contact is not consistent, they will try a yank and if they get away with it then hey presto they have learned an evasion. I was at BETA on sunday and theres a couple of new products that may help. Id advise a couple of lessons first to check your rein contact and hand consistency. also sore teeth/gums make the horse do this- particullalry in four/five year olds as they change their molars and corners. The mailer bridging Rein- Bridges the Reins so the horse cant get all the rein from you. www.twofairmares.com/bridging.htmlThe Rein Bow- provides reins holds on the reins so your hands dont slip The Remus- likw side reins for riding or lungeing in. www.stopthathorse.com/remus/remus.php The linkshave the bridging Rein and the Remus on but cant locate Rein Bow but Im sure if you contact BETA they will send you details. The de-gogue is also good
