For everyone, I think. The weather has finally cleared up and there is a strong wind blowing, drying everything up fast. But the wind spooks the nags horribly. Yesterday the arenas were still too heavy to use so ventured out with Paco, tagging on to two hacks going out from the club as I thought it unwise to go out alone after last week's madness. Paco was fine. The first hour was with some real littlies so we just walked most of the way and he was pretty calm. Then I went out with the RI and some teenagers and Paco was calm enough in trot. The ground wasn't good enough for a canter and anyway all the horses were acting up a bit due to the inactivity of the last few weeks (despite best efforts to lunge/ride them whenever possible). But Racaille was horrible. He was being ridden by a teenager who had to swap with the RI halfway through as he was plunging around. Really naughty. Then he whipped his head round and bit the RI's leg. What has got into him?? He needs knocking into shape. He has also become naughty in hand, nibbling and not respecting your space and some of the youngsters are frightened of him now. He definitely needs some discipline. I'm hoping it's just his age/lack of work etc but it's quite shocking to see such a nice boy turn into a monster. In fact both boys need a lesson or two in manners and some serious work.

Is there a great big hill where you live....
For naughtiness here we take them up a really steep hill, make them trot like mad and we often find it calms them down.... failing that a ton of work could be the answer, gives them something else to think about.

hard work I'm afraid Rac - something to take the wind out of their sails either free schooling in canter or something reallt complex to make them think.
Brave is the same - he really needs to be worked everyday and if he has 2 or 3 days off on the trot he turns into a little bargy, nippy, rude terror after a couple of hours work he is as good as gold again.
The weather though simply doesn't help.

Jane, yes, we do that too. We have a really long hill that we trot up and it really sorts them out! It's really just a question of getting out - the weather has been so terrible that it has been nigh on impossible to do anything. When it rains here it is not a gentle drizzle but a sheeting downpour and that has been going on for weeks now. With any luck it has now changed and I will be able to do a lot more. Fi - you're right that some nags just don't tolerate time off. Paco, normally is fine. He could stand in his paddock for a week and still be his normal gentlemanly self on a hack so it is a bit shocking to see him so naughty. Racaille, on the other hand, is saying quite clearly that he needs more discipline. I think I'm finding it hard having two. How do you cope, Fi???

Sadly not Flea (in this weather). It's not something that we need normally, except to escape from the sun! So when we have bad weather we are really shocked!!!

Sounds about the same as what happened to Basil, not enough work and the age where they start flexing the naughty muscles- a really bad combination! Check what he is eating and knock him onto something less rich if you can and work and discipline!

Racaille- boys will be boys especially in the spring Great to hear that Paco is back to normal ;D Racaille is very young and has behaved like a star for the last 6 months (is it that long?) Maybe he just needs to chill a bit? On the other hand after Brig's post about Basil getting bolshy because of livery conditions and JO (i think) saying the same...I hope there is nothing like that behind this change in behaviour?? Anyway, nice to hear your weather is picking up. Its still Narnia here- you know forever winter

You may have something there Duckles - now Racaille is ridden by lots of teenagers (he's on working livery until June ) he has learned to throw his weight around and many of the teenagers are scared of him. I did some in-hand work with him this week and he has learned already that I will accept no crap from him! It has also helped that we've changed his feeding regime. Paco too has calmed down, thank goodness. He seems to have given up the eating frenzy that he was in!!! He seems to have finally understood that the food won't disappear if he doesn't stuff it into his gob as soon as possible! In fact, we had a whizz round the cross country field this afternoon and he was perfect: energetic but not silly and simply flying over the logs - this is my bete noire, I hate fixed jumps but he made me feel very safe. He was also blindingly white in the sunshine and he was getting all sorts of wonderful comments (for once!!!!!) So now something is bound to go wrong, eh?
