Just had a lesson on the horse i hope to be buying at the end of the month. I have him on loan at mo. I had a lesson on him once before which went really badly, today he was fresh and forward going but listening to me and really tried. We were trying a bit of leg yield on increasing circles, lots of transitions and changes of rein and his usually bobbly trot really started to smooth out. I too was trying to slow the walk with my seat, it's a lot about being still and doing very little, feel really positive for the future. Changed his bit to a french link from a waterford which i never liked hopefully he likes it too!

You're right Sol, there will be many ups and downs but it's great that you've had a lesson that felt good

Theres nothing like the feeling of a good ride! (oh no lyric territory again!) but seriously solomon Im glad it went well, because a bad lesson can really put you down whereas this seems much more positive. He may have had an off day before, tthey do have them and we forget they have aches and pains just like us. Mine is teething at moment and on the right rein is very uncomfortable in his mouth, but at one time Id have been inclined to think he was being a pratt- now I know he is just saying ow! Needless to say Im just lungeing off the headcollar for the moment- but the point is- even if your next ride isnt as good, there may be a genuine reason, I think on the whole horses do try to please us once they respect us and understand what we want. Good luck!

Thanks Brig tou are so right i have just come from riding him which hasn't gone quite as well as yesterday but i am so much more confident with my RI present. Also i don't have to think wha to do next. I find schooling on my own a real challenge especially when other people are in the menage. Any tips on how to concentrate better and how to plan?

Dont plan to do too much. Look to improve one thing and if it happens be content with that. A good trot on the long side and the horse is soft and light is worth a thousand circles.
I too get a bit put off by other people in the school so usually will try to work with them, ride in pairs and practise some figures of eights- its suprising how tricky it is and you concentrate so much on your pair that the horses relax and go well. If no one else wants to play then Ill do something really simple like work on engaging the hind end by going on a 15-20m circle and do lots of walk, trot/halt/trot/walk.halt/walk/trot transitions. Only allow a few strides in between each transition and make the command come from your seat, keeping your hands as light as possible. That way you will keep the horse busy and do something useful and also not keep having to get out of someone elses way as youve amrked your territory (hee hee).
Good luck!

Thanks Brig really good advice i have had another lesson today-went really well again so last one was'nt a fluke! I am really hopeful that things are gonna be good with this little chap. He is such a poppet to handle too. Have been doing the transitions today, trying to control pace of trot with my seat and asking for a little bit of bend he is funny 'cos he tries and then slows right down 'cos he finds it hard. We are learning together tho' hopefully .Ithink he is the best!

Sol so pleased it is all coming together for you, did you manage to find out about the lameness/flexion test issue.

Haven't had a vet look at him, RI says he is sound just out of balance occasionally. Spoke to a vet about flexion generally and she said most horses have some hock arthritis over the age of 10. I did some trotting poles with him on saturday he certainly flexed his hocks happily over them! I should get a wee vet check done but would still want him anyway so not much point. Trial ends 28th Feb and i have to decide. OH just asked what i want for birthday{4.3.} and i said Peter of course!

there is a pic on members only should i buy horse part 1 not me on him tho'. I rode him again today passed a terrifying FLOOD sign you know the red triangles, well that shook both of us. Lucky for me i had a friend with me who grabbed his bridle and walked him passed. Can't say i enjoyed it but i did it and he was better on the way back.

It all sounds really positive - and you've made up your mind, haven't you?! One of our dressage horses was vetted a few weeks ago and he hopped a bit after the flexion test but until he warms up he is always irregular anyway. Vet wasn't bothered.
