Shes fine in that arena normally, with or without other horses, the only thing different is the white boards, but she was spooking at the ad's around the arena, which shes usually fine with too.
I really want to know whats gone off at home... im really worried but no ones answering their phones.
Still not got any sensation back in my right lower leg after wearing them boots...

Right... Eddie and Merlin have galloped down two major roads. Eddies on the police horse box, Merlin wont load. Berthas been found at some farm across the A60, and across another road. Bertha had a 'moment' and threw my mum into a tree, shes scratched and stiff but ok. Merlins rider insisted they go past the pigs, basically how it all happened, Eddie hates pigs and spooked a little, so my mum said to his rider to get off and lead him, which she did. Ed was fine, they past a path, and went to turn up it, when Merlin galloped flat out past Ed and Bertha, causing Ed to trample his rider, thankfully she was wearing my old BP as theres apparently huge foot marks on the BP from where he trampled her. My mum then had the arguement with the tree and all 3 stampeded off. Merlins rider is making some odd noises, Eds rider gets up to see if my mums ok, before finding Merlins rider. My mum calls 999, gets ambulance, and my dads at work and with him being in the c. room, he finds out via his partner, who leaves work and calls mounted, hence the police lorry. Loads of police, and all roads closed. Person we know with a cob like Berthas was also hacking out, alone, and has been very helpful apparently. She rode off to find Merlins riders OH as couldnt get hold of him via phone, he then went to hospital to find his OH. Eddie apparently went on the box fine, and we think Bertha will, but Merlin just wouldnt load... Apparently theres about the whole of mounted and the whole of the towns police on the scene... so if youre about my town, nows the time to commit crimes!!! I just want to go back home and see if everyones ok... but i cant. I have Gem unfortunately. Who of course, my mum reckons i should consider selling to buy a jump horse, or at least something i can compete on. My dads wanting to sell all though after today... It wasnt either of our two's faults, Merlin started it, hes dangerous...

Oh dear, what a rotten day for you!
Wondering about Gem, is she usually sppoky or could she possibly have an eye problem? I had a gelding once who developed an eye problem, and he started spooking at stuff which had never bothered him before.
I hope your mum and all involved in the other incident are all OK.
Cheers, Midori

Hmm eye problems could be a possibility. Never had her vetted, but i suppose it would explain the spookiness, and the over jumping? However, when hacking out, esp alone, she is 100% perfect? Weve had times when weve had to go up to 'meet' the scary object, and after then shes fine about it all. Bertha and Eddie are very nervous horses anyway, i had a handful last time i took Ed out as he spooked, panicked and tried to bolt off (not a true bolt, just a spin and gallop as fast as poss to end of path - when i stopped him) but hes a genuine horse, same goes for Bertha. She has these 'moments' where she panics and really goes into over drive. Weve had her confidence up whilst hacking out since weve had her, i think it'll have knocked her for six. Ive told my mum not to take either horse out until Gem gets back - shes a confident lead horse who will give confidence to all horses with her, and if anything does happen, 1. i can handle her, and 2. shes a rock, something happens, she'll behave. I wonder whether its just the competition environment thats getting to Gem, shes probably just not a competition horse, shes a happy hacker...

i wondered if youve got a place like we had in devon near you it was a dressage comp yard and they had the arenas marked out with white boards all the time we could hire it to practice in ithought if you had maybe you could just go there and get her use to it but without the stress of knowing it was a comp etion because your'd be more relaxed as well maybe she wouldnt get stressed out then for the next comp would be better

It would be nice to perhaps buy some white boarding, to get her used to it, and the letters that you stick in the ground but its a very expensive way of doing it - we have letters on the fence at home.
Where i am, the boards come out morning of the show and go away in the evening. Its a shame really, it would be nice to try get her used to them in a home environment before taking her out anywhere...
I really am regretting entering the 3 tests this weekend - one of saturday, two on sunday.

53.5% - CM 44 'Attractive horse but unfortunately overawed and not listening to the rider sufficiently. Potentially very capable horse when more confidence and able to relax body and mind.'
Yes, she has the potential, but shes too hot really to settle. Shes already on magic calmer!!! Im going to up the dose this week and suffer the consequences over the week - aka a tired, lazy horse.
Can you ride after giving sedalin or the equiv? If i can overly dope her up so shes a dope on a rope, she'll hopefully not have the energy to spook and go nuts, so with any luck might be calm and might learn from it???

could you accept that she is not cut out for dressage or shows of any sort? it may just be her temprement that she will never be happy doing this. Sedating her when you intend to ride her is very dangerous depending on what you are giving her.
To be honest I have been there and it probably took about 10-15 tests before he even beagan to settle. I just had to bite the bullet and not get nervous or tense myself and ride them as best I could thinking of them as means to an end.
Thats horses for you and we have to accept the rough with the smooth. horses are not people and have no concept of importance of events so she does not know she has done wrong. give her a cuddle and just plug away or you will get all stress head!!
*hugs* cos despite what I just said its bloody horrible!!!

Im wanting to explore every opportunity before i retire her to hacking only... shes only 10, theres so much she *could* do, the judge said she had potential ...
Shes on magic calmer atm, but on low-medium doses i double the dose before a competition, but doesnt make much difference, i was wondering whether there was possibly another route which would help her to chill out, not necessarily sedation (i know thats dangerous, i just know of people who have ridden after things like sedalin etc)
Ive got 3 more tests this weekend, if she begins to show any sign of improvement with the upped dosage of magic ill think there could be hope, but if it doesnt work ill just retire her to being a happy hacker, maybe shove her in foal to a nice stallion after getting her fully checked by the vet...
Thanks maxi, she did begin to settle last term but shes always been weary of these bigger white boards - theyre the posh sort, raised off the ground, with the big blocked letters... The other type shes not *as* bad with.

wowzers! What a pants day. It sucks sometimes with horses I feel as if they are just one big emotional roller coaster. The pics i've seen of Gem she is very beautiful would be a shame to give up. how about buying some scafolding boards and turning them into dressage markers? or im sure if you had a good look round travis perkins/Do it All you'd find something subitable. Fire can be a dipstick sometimes. he'll walk past something a 100 times then dump me off at it. or he'll take a random dislike to something on the outside of a jumping ring. I keep tellin people by the time hes 20 he'll be a super pony! (if he realises everything isn't gonna kill him). My brother keeps tellin me to give up horses and buy a motorbike He says it will cause less heartache and requires less space and work. Hope things look better tomorow.

It's awful when they react like that in a test, must have been the day for it as my boy was high as a kite and wouldn't really settle, although that may be due to have not done dressage on grass for 3 years lol.
I have to agree sedalin is not a good solution and magnesium calmers only work if your horse has a deficit of magnesium, the only thing that worked with Blake was getting him out and staying as calm as possible. I mean today he was a nightmare, but I kept laughing and smiling as there was no point in getting upset over it. Heck I only got 51% in one of my elementary tests today which is not good lol I'm sure the judge felt sorry for me.
As for the other stuff i hope everyone is okay and the horse get home safely.

AW Mae- what a shocker- when it goes wrong it really goes wrong. Hope all horses /riders are ok after their misadventures. How tense are you during the test? Mares are mega sensitive- is she picking up your vibes and worries? Brig

She was amazing in the warm up, i just did my usual canter until shes on her knees (nah, the more canter i do the better her trot work is) but as soon as i went to take her in, bang.
Kylie, great idea! ;D Will definately go to somewhere like that and try find something! ;D

Thanks maxi, she did begin to settle last term but shes always been weary of these bigger white boards - theyre the posh sort, raised off the ground, with the big blocked letters... The other type shes not *as* bad with. it neednt be expensive to re-create all of that - buy some chep ply and some white paint! Also, buy some ply boards and paint garish adverts and put them in differnt places in your school each week - she will soon get used to it. Maxie is right...dosing is only covering up whatever issue it may be - and if you can dose to the level of non-spook you will probably lack any kind of impulsion in adressage test!! lol! I recon bomp-proofing at home and as many shows as possible and if that dont work, maybe she (or you) just finds shows a bit too stressful!

the stuff ive got is called equisedazine but my sister reminded me that in showing they use benylin cough mixture on show ponies given about 45 mins before the class it takes the edge off but keeps the 'sparkle' and its not a banned substance

Benylin helps to calm them down? Off to tesco tonight, might get some and try it when i ride her tomorrow.
Thanks for the name of that stuff, shes off home in 3 weeks time, when she gets home ill give my vets a ring and see about trying to get some... Is it prescription only?
