H and I went out for a longer hack yesterday as teh weather was nice and both Brave and Chomps could do with the exercise, and as Chomps is now hacking up past his dreaded corner with little more than a hesitation I decided I would show H some of the tracks in the forest.
Well we got to where I used to go into the woods and there was a new gate and a pile of logs, I know that they had been felling up there but I also know they don't work on weekends. So we happily passed the "felling operations" "no unauthorised entry signs".
As we walked up what used to be a brilliant canter track - grassed over track it was now a bit of a mud way but nothing too bad. We then came across a new turning circle and what looked like a brilliant canter up the hill up the widened but leveled track.
As we crossed the muddy turning circle and just as I was saying to H "it looks a bit too soft for a canter" Chompy took one more step onto what looked like the track and hi leg disappeared down into the mud to above his knee, because he was then standing trying to get his foot out his back feet and other foreleg started to sink as well.
I yelled at H to bail off as he was going down and I was worried that he would roll onto his side and squash her as he tried to get out if he paniced. After what felt like an enternity (but was probably a split second) H was off and onto the hard ground at the side of the track (slightly covered in mud) Chomps had managed to get his hock underneath him and get himself out of the quick-mud (as it acted like quicksand but was mud). meantime Brave and I having stood still had started to sink too inch by inch.
well I jumped off and we led the boys back down to the road before jumping back on.
When we got home we hosed off Chomps legs and he doesn't have a scratch on him and it also doesn't look like he pulled anything either getting himself out.
Yes we were very very lucky, to get out of it with no injuries etc but I had thought the warning signs were to stop you getting hit on the head by a falling tree or squished by heavy machinery, not beacuse their operations had b***** up a track!
