I have quite arthritic knees and as most of you know spend long hours in the saddle. I was wondering if the Sprenger stirrups are worth trying? has anyone used them and do they take the pressure from your knees? Thank you jane

I can't afford Sprengers but I do have some "bendy" stirrups that are similar but MUCH cheaper. I think I paid £20 for them and I think they may be "Shires". Any way I love them and would certainly recommend them. I have problems with my hips and ankles and find that the bend does take some of the pressure off and they are much more comfortable than non-bendy ones. I'm sure the Sprengers are fab but you can get cheaper and good alternatives Zx

The ones with springy foam on them for endurance riding can be quite useful for articulation probs, apparently. I get long-distance stuff from Performance Equestrian (and no I am not on their payroll although I should be for all the free publicity I give them! ;D) I have mentioned before that a lot of the champion Trec bods here use Kvall stirrups - take a bit of getting used to but they swear by them. modified to include link www.kvall.fr/index.php?lang=en&PHPSESSID=1f9d400e22fcc6b90d53bc6fdb55d46b

I have used sprenger for years and found them great but I am fortunate to have no trouble in my knees or joints or back. THere was a fashion where I was a good few years ago to use sprenger stirrups because all 'the showjumpers' had them and I saved up for ages and bought them. I know a few people who had back problems found them a great help. A lady told me recently tat she uses Thorogood flexitread stirrups (20 pounds) and they are as good as sprenger but lighter and a lot cheaper. She had trouble somewhere- can't remember if it was knees. They are indeed very light.

I used the Sprenger stirrups after falling off and being dragged - I wanted something flexible and safe. I have used them for years, and have now purchased a pair of their new bow balance stirrups which are even better than their originals. They have a really wide tread and are extremely comfortable. They are easy to 'pick up' as well if you lose one, or need to mount quickly if you have a fidgety horse. they are expensive, but he cheapest ones are to be found on ebay - there is a supplier who sells fantastic quality German gear.

Thanks Kay and Abi
I still haven't bought any (like I said in another thread I get so mean when buying something for myself,) BUT I am definately going to get some soon, at the moment the shires ones are being looked at most favourably because they are cheap but I have seen the thorowgood T6 ones too (half the price of sprenger) which look like they'd be good...
oh decisions, decisions

I have had so many operations and treatments on my knees I couldnt ride without my sprengers I LOVE THEM !!!! I have the bow balance ones for Dressage and standard Sprengers for every day riding, You do notice the difference and imo they are worth every penny
