ok i have now left college and now working full time and am hoping to get savs a new saddle. I am hoping to eventually save £700 - 1000 for a decent saddle (might take a while ). i want a GP saddle to fit a connemara. so main question whats the best. i want it for general riding and showing classes (m&m, WH) so must be comfortable. and is there anywhere where i can go and try saddles other question how do i measure them?

I love my Jefferies Adler VSD. the VSD is slightly straighter cut than a standard GP so is good for horses with big shoulders or a rider who has a stronger leaning towards dressage than jumping.
Chompy has an ideal working hunter saddle which is very straight cut due to his bulk, but does have knee rolls suitable for jumping. I find the saddle really hard and if you spend more than an hour in the saddle you get a numb bum, so he has a fleecy seat savor on it to make it more comfortable for me.
A saddler should be able to advise on style, size and cut and more importantly fit for the horse. They should have a number of different types and makes that you can try until you find the best for you and your horse

You have to measure yourself first. You sit down so that your thighs are straight out and ..... flipping enry I'll try and find the link. Also there is a firm in the UK that sells very good second hand saddles that you can try first - Saddles Direct? I'll look for the link.

i'm liking the look of saddles direct atm some quite nice saddles on there. my instructors boss is a trained saddler/saddle fitter so gonna get her out. only prob is savs won't let anyone but me touch the saddle once it's on her back so could be interesting.

I have a Farrington WH saddle and I love it. I had it custom made, my saddle fitter came out, assessed and measures AJ amd brought the saddle back about 3 weeks later. It fits AJ really well and is very comfy. It cost £750 which I think is really good value. The girl I use also has a large selection of 2nd hand saddles that she has taken in part / ex etc so had loads to choose from. I would really recommend getting one fitted as if you get it wrong it could be an expensive mistake Zx

I have an Ideal GP event saddle which is looooovely. We had it made to us, which is very useful if your an adult riding a pony. Something to do with width of pelvis and length of the back of the pony.

(whispers to spotti) i think treeless too, would more than likely fit both ponios Sav, Ideals are popular on my yard, quite nice. I know at Ingatestone Saddlery you can box your horse to fit and test a saddle, but thats in essex so a bit far

I lurve my Fhoenix treeless!!! I did hate it at first as it puts you in a completely different position but now I woudn't ride in anything else. I really only stuck with it because Smurfy loved it so much. ;D He had a really choppy stride in my old saddle but now he really strides out. I rode in the new Vogue GPT on my last lesson but it felt really weird as I'm used to the slightly more extreme position of the Fhoenix now. But my friend got on and tried the Vogue (she's used to conventional saddles) and she loved it. And best of all, no aching seat bones (I've got a very bony bum!) because of the superb memory foam seat (although must admit in this weather it takes a little while to soften up - the seat that is, not my bum). ;D
Definitely the saddle to get if you've got two fairly normal shaped horses.
