Just spent £50.50 on supplements for the new horse - this is very painfull given that i am currently also spending £20 p/w on his physio and i can not even ride him at the moment
I suppose its worth it in the long run, the supplements (build up and something for muscular pain) are to help his back, but tsill bloody painful!

That's a really good idea! I think I'll keep an expenditure diary too! It hurt last week when I had to pay the farrier two lots of shoeing on the same day - €126! But I can't complain really, neither of the boys has any regular 'extra' bill. Touching wood .....

Mine generally are quite cheap to keep, my biggest expensive is £40 every 4 weeks for their feet trimming, but I have a stonking vet bills to look forward to anytime soon....and a dilemmia...it's bound to have the word Colic in it so if I claim I guess It will be added to Murphs's exclusions but if I don't and he ever needs colic surgery or colic treatment in general and I need to claim it will be void anyhow if they look into his clinical history I guess through me not telling them? Is there actually any point actually having insurance other than 3rd party I sometimes wonder?

Oh Haffy, you have said a dirty word here, and one which always sets me off. Insurance. I have told the story of Travers' lami before and will not repeat it. Only to say that if I had not taken out any insurance when I bought Travers, but paid the premiums into a savings account, then I would have £7000 by now. More than enough to pay for colic surgery, without the hassle and stress of dealing with exclusions, previous conditions and smarta** kids on the phone telling you what Petplan won't do. Hope Murph is well now. Travers sends his best. Wu

Hmmm, you got me thinking Wu. Insurance here for horses is still relatively rare but I've got some. I have now paid about €1,200 (over four years) and have just extended his life cover until he is 15. But, as you say, it's a bit pointless, isn't it? Especially as I have 'low value' nags. Hmmmm again .......

I agree with Spotti- I pay 1000 euro each year in insurance (includes my horse box but not tack or vet's fees)- I know i'm being ripped off but feel its the responsible thing to do just in case- there isn't a lot of choice in insurance here and most people I know don't bother with it.

Sorry Guys - have to disagree here, my isurance company paid out over £6000 - £7000 last year following Figaro's death, his vet bills, Dexter's vet bills, then his loss of use claim. It may be expensive but I couldn't have afforded all that.
Whilst I could have probably afforded the vet bills on their own that would have wiped out my savings meaning that I wouldn't have been able to afford a replacement horse, as it was the insurance money pretty much covered it all.
