Right, I need recommendations and advice please! I need a stable rug for Faith to keep her back warm (because her muscles seem less likely to go 'wrong' if they're kept warm...thats the plan anyway) but she's very hairy and its not looking like she'll be clipped at any point because she doesn't need to be so it doesn't want to be any thincker than a lightweight. Also needs to have shoulders in it because she's quite broad and rugs either restrict neck movement or slip back and restrict leg movement...hence needing shoulders!! Would she need a stable rug? A fleece? A cooler? Another type? Any ideas??

Weatherbeeta jasper lite maybe?
I am of the thinking that stabled horses actually need more rugging than ones living out as they cannot move around to generate heat as their outdoor pals can. I know horses aren't like humans but think how you get cold stood around but not so cold when on the move.

I suppose it depends on the stable - those in a barn are warmer than those opening straight out to the great outdoors. I know nothing about rugging since we don't here. But would a hairy rustic need a rug in a stable? Isn't a good armful of hay all the heating they need? Our 'outdoor' horses have shelters but that's all, they are never rugged even when it goes down to minus 15. It's rarely wet AND cold however. Perhaps this makes all the difference?

Hmm..well her stable is open at the front but air can move through from the rest of the block. Hopefully she should be out again soon, but I know what you mean about standing still and being freezing (just had a lecture in a freezing cold room and nearly lost my toes to frostbite!).
I'm not sure if my plan will actually work, although I do know a girl whose horse has to have his back warm at all times otherwise his back muscles go into spasm and he has to have a lot of work done to put them right again...so far Faith has just been having her travel rug/very light stable rug on - mainly to dry her off after the brief showers when hacking - and touch wood, her back seems ok. Took it off the other night though and the following morning she seemed more tense in her back end and appears to have done something to her shoulder...could be a coincidence but I'd rather not risk it! My only problem with my current stable rug is that it has no shoulders and slips down her neck - possibly the reason she's done her shoulder in???
I'll have a nosey at the Weatherbeeta. Cheers Haffy

I dont think I have seen any stable rugs with shoulders in them, They wouldn't move around as much as when they are in the field so can see why they dont have them. If you really need the shoulders then why not just put a light T/O on her?
