hi ya, i have a friend that has an 8 year old horse that has stagnant water in his stable (up un till i changed it) he's still eatten and runing around the field be has been a little quiter in the stable in the mornings(hes not normaly that quite). so her question is do you think he will be ok now or do think we should have a vet in just to check him or is it because he wouldn't drink the smelly water? ?? theres no lose of weight and he still eatting well!!!! hes eyes are still bright and his coat is too!!!!

why was the water not changed/checked??
I would just keep an eye on him and maybe give the vet a ring for some advice. I think as long as he has fresh water in the field he should be fine but really he should have had fresh water in his stable at all times too.

yes fleabitten i told her that but because it a self filling trough she didn't think to check it, as she though it would be ok, but u would think she'd clean it once aweek. i have the same in my stable but i empty mine every other day(as its a full size water trough) and she seen me do mine too, but never asked why.

Given the choice ray drinks water out of a stagnant pond rather than the fresh bucket of water I have struggled to carry out to the field generally in the freezin cold! He has never suffered any ill effects, but he is quite stoical!

our old pony used to prefere the revolting water full of dead leaves and green slime in the old bath, to the freash everyday clean water in the trough , didnt do her any harm as she lived till 38 years old

Murph likes drinking out of muddy/yukky looking puddles too...there seems to be a trend appearing here

I never let mine drink out of puddles, there is a risk it is full of wild boar pee and sand. You perhaps won't be bothered by the wild boar pee in the UK, but the sand/mud should be avoided.

if he is drinking from it the water should be fresh, as it will refill. It'll be algae in the trough which as far as i know is fine. Stagnent water is water that just sort of sits and get the algae film over the top. takes a while though!
If thats what his water trough was like i would be more worried that the horse hasn't been drinking!

becca's right - dehydration would be worse than the risk of drinking the stagnant water.

as long as he looks healthy i don't think there's anything to worry about. plus not all horses drink the same amount, my horse doesn't drink much at all, and the pony drinks loads, they've always been like that. i've never got on with self filling boals, they always need cleaning, mines got one, which is all dirty, but instead of cleaning it i've just given him a big tug tub full of water. they are wild animals, so wouldn't normally drink clean tap water am sure it'll be fine.
