knock her off hard feed and just feed something like alfa hay and sugarbeet- more so she thinks shes getting a feed and to carry her foot powder. She sounds as though she needs some really steady calm riding- forget the schooling until she trusts you more and hack hack hack= lots of trotting to get the tickle out of her toes! She looks a sweet mare who has been spoiled by careless riding!

Hi I've had my arab on every calmer on the market and have never really noticd much improvement. He is however on the Blue Chip "Kalmer" and it does seem to be the best i've tried. Also if you need a quick fix for clipping etc try the Equine America syringe, x3 doses for £12 ish and it does work (for mine any way) Zx

I agree with brig - knock out her hard feed completely and let her have ad lib hay and grass - most horses do not actually need hard feed - our hunters hunt on very little as any thing more makes them go loco!
Give it a go and see what you think after 2 weeks.

I'm trying the naff liquid calmer at the moment {not magic} My very unbomb proof gelding has it in a small handful of chaff about an hour before we hack out. normaly anything other than a car will have him shaking and breaking out in a sweat, in a complete panic. We started on the full recomended dose and it was a complete revalation, he was so good with tractors, buses, everything. We have been out three times in the last week or so and each time I've cut the dose down a bit, now we are just on half the lower recomended dose. He had a traffic accident some years ago and has never been ok on the roads so you can imagine how proud of him i am.

The best calmer I have used is one by Equine Herbals and I think it is called Equi-Calm - we had a TB at our yard who was a bit nutting in the box gave some of this and worked wonders - I really recommend their products as all the ones we have used are amazing!! It is a liquid and you only give a small amount about 20ml for a big horse. equineherbals.com/products/equicalm.html

A friend who's horse was on a year's boxrest(!) was advised to use a magnesium based calmer and it worked really well - he went from trying to jump out to happily his hay. She might just need time to get used to you some like to try you out a bit to see what they can get away with. Good luck x

Dear God, a year's box rest !!!!! Have absolutley no experience of calmers ( so I'm a lot of use, eh! ;D) We always tackle hysterical horses by adjusting their feeding regime. Like Brig and Tory I'd knock off the hard feed. Only three of our competion horses are getting hard feed at the moment, all the others are thriving on lots of hay and luzerne hay (because it's around). But you've got grass in the UK so you wouldn't need the luzerne - although is autumn grass full of sugar? Can't remember ....

I don't know much about calmers, but I knew 2 horses who went loopy if on anything with molasses in, most horse feeds contain this so if she calms down if you knock out all hard feed but then feel like you need to reintroduce something - do it one at a time and try to find something unmolassed.

Totally agree but would also add Baileys Lo-Cal Balancer then you know she's getting all the vitamins, minerals, etc that's needed plus she'll think she's getting a hard feed. I use this on my Chief as he's a good doer but still needs his vitamins.

Feed wise why don't you try her on something like either Alfa-A Oringal chaff or Dengie Oil and maybe Calm & Condition by Allen & Page? and see how she goes, if she's still slighty nutty try her on Naffs Magic Calmer! Have used it before on my friends rather lively TBx and it worked really well.. I wouldn't go for something like Oxyshot as that is just like a worming paste meant for chiling them for like of farrier/dentist/shoeing/loading I would go for a supplement!
If your really not sure see if you can speak to someone from either your local feed shop or feed suppliers that are expersenced on feeding n see what they suggest for you mare!
