Had a note form yard mate that she had vet out last night - her horse has mites or mild colic. I dont think he has colic. I think they are referring to him stamping his hind foot (quite high) repeatedly. He did it before and I though ooh, colic? so went over but he didnt look uncomfortable -no looking back or anything...I scratched his fetloc and heel and it was well itchy (eyes rolled into top of head and everything!) so I think they were just itchy and he coudlnt scratch them Now Willow has really itchy heels too...but they ahve been cracked because of terrible damp weather...so I have been thinking bit of mud fever - itchy, scabby and irritating. But now vet has said that I think well...if Buddy has brought mites (no-other horse I know has them, but he too has scabby heels from the damp) maybe willow has that not MF? Or has the vet overlooked that? I dont know much about mites...how do I tell if they have them and how would I treat it?

hmm, i had something else up from h&h about mites + getting rid. Seem to have posted wrong link!! Clever me!! as far as i know, to test for mites, get a skin scraping done but it can show a negative result even if the horse has mites.

Looked into this a bit more and I think they actually may have mites I thought because iot was scabby it was MF.... Appartently a sign of mites is scabby too...and Gus (at my old yard) always has really bad hard scabby heels - she used to put aloe vera on it so maybe he had them too....it is cornwall - lots of farmland and warn wet summers. I read soemone say try Parasite repel (by barrier someone or other) well I have some of that so might get soem hibiscrub, and then dose up with parasite repel? But then if it is MF, that wont help - guess Ill know then!!! Looking back, the reaction of the horses when you scratch their fetlocks is pretty blinkin itchy... urgh not happy bout that.

My old boy had mites one winter and it looked exactly like mud fever - the vet was convinced it was that and refused any other treatment, but he was so itchy and started to cut his legs so I got another vet out who straight away said mites and told me to use the frontline stuff and it cleared up really quickly. Hope it all goes well.

When I got my old horse she had mites and her legs were pretty much covered from top to bottom in scurfy scabs (poor old thing). To start with the vet gave me some steroid cream (it was nappy rash cream but with steroids put in) to loosen the scabs off. He had to shave her legs (was terrible ) Then when the worst had gone I used frontline on a monthly basis and hibiscrub frequently and smothered the remainding scabs in cream to soften them. Poor thing hated it - must have been so uncomfortable. Some vets say that wormers work as they kill the mites/mange from the inside as well but my vet says that theres nothing to prove that works. If they have any particularly bad areas you may have to consider de-hairing to get the treatment to the skin (I know it's not a nice thought but if its spreading then best to get rid asap)

Thanks - sounds like frontline is a winner...
they are not very bad at all really - and my two dont have big cob feathers - hardly nay really..
I think I will go for the hibbiscrub and some frontline and then put protocon (my saviour, and will treat any mud fever at same time just incase) on the rest of the time....

Can foot stamping be colic??? Princess does that with her back legs now and then but she is more likely to stamp backwards, not at her belly and she puts her ears back and wobbles her mouth (sounds weird but i no the feeling ''aaah my foots is so freakin itchy and i cant scratch it!'' We did get a mite treatment thing and it stopped but it keeps coming back.

benzyl bensoate (sp?) you can get it from your chemist, if they smile when you ask for a big bottle it's cos humans use it for crabs! works though. Just rub it into the feather
my fave is sulpher and pig oil though, old fashined remedy used on heavy horses for greasy heel, but it also works for mud fever, mites, mild sweet itch and god know what else

One of my liveries, I'm pretty sure has leg mites but she's convinced its MF That's being treated with hibiscrub, udder oil etc. and not improving I'd completely forgotten about the Benzyl Benzoate Thanks for the memory jog Becca ;D You must get some Ceej, its amazing for reducing the itch. ;D *Plots who to send to the chemist *

sorry delay in getting back. Sulpher and pig oil most tack shops caon order in for you but it is pretty easy to find on google, you have to buy them seperately but with will last you forever!
i can mix up a bottle to send to you if you like, see if it works for you? (i only know one horse personally out of a good 10 it didn't work for)
