Sorry guys need to vent my anger! Was out hacking tonight sticking to country lanes and odd bridleway, we were coming along a straight country road at 6.45pm so not dusk and this 4x4 was coming towards us, clearly not bothering to slow down so I gave the hand signal to tell them to slow down as road was wet and the puddle noise can spook some horses (not mine but not the point). Anyway this woman slams her brakes on beside me and has a go at me saying she was not going fast etc etc. I pointed out to her that she was doing about 20mph on wet roads which is dangerous and she could have a horse land on her bonnet! Ramble ramble she went on about "I live here" (yes? do you want an award? Does this road belong to you then?) Her husabnd then had the cheek to say "Well darling (patronising bastard!) it is a little dark to be out don't you think! I then point out my attire to him that they must be blind (as we are the fluorescent queens) and would he treat a pedestrian or cyclist the same way? Bloody cow then drives off and she got a one finger salute from me! Gggrrrrhhhh f***ing bottomholes really p**s me off! What annoyed me most was the fact that we were in the process of pulling the horses into an opening and she just couldnt wait (6" max between my heel and her wing mirror! Why or why can we not have more bridleways! It is getting to the point where I dont enjoy hacking much anymore! Thanks for listening Sam

Bl**dy awful - how ignorant of them!!!!! Doesn't surprise me much as our roads a like this too, even the quieter ones are becoming less & less accessible to GG's and riders. Hope it doesn't upset you too much. x

I know the feeling! Luckily not had the experience of the tosspots out there (haven't hacked enough) but no doubt I'll come across some idiot one day and then I will have the pleasure...
It really suprises me just how ignorant some people are. Or how much more important their precious cars are...more important that 2 innocent lives??? (horse and riders).
And you were hi-viz'ed up the eyeballs as well! Well that's just plain stupidity on their part (I'm the other queen of fluorescents - we have everything lol...exercise sheet, hat band, tabard, leg wraps, rein covers, browband cover, gloves, arm straps...I've even put some of the rein covers on my stirrups! I may look daft but no one can say they didn't see me coming!)

The best (okay only good thing really) about moving to Notts was the fantastic off road hacking it has...woodland everywhere, Clumber park, Southwell trail thingy and tons more bridleways many of which link up easily with minimal roadwork (or maybe it's just the area I live in?)
I am so glad I no longer have to hack on roads, as incidents like this are common place it would seem.

I have developed a real fear of hacking and it isn't my horse but the roads. They are so much busier now and people seem to be in far more of a rush than they used to, just wish I had access to more off road hacking Zx

What @rseholes! I can never understand why (some) drivers find it so hard to slow down/drive wide/be polite. Mind you, it'd these cretins who also run over cyclists, walkers ...... But there are prats everywhere. I was out hacking with my chum on her TB and a van came past (on a little lane) so close that the wing mirror hit the GGs head. Luckily he was very calm and no damage done but..!

My horse is brilliant in traffic but I stopped riding on the roads because of the drivers like that. I've actually had a passenger in my car suggesting I give a little toot to "let them know you're there"!! Another told me to pull out at a busy junction in front of a horsebox! Both these people got a response they were not expecting but, most worryingly, both are drivers. The standard of driving today is appalling. Even when I'm driving I find myself suddenly faced with a head on situation because the person coming the other way can't wait for me to pass before overtaking. It's all me first, no manners, no road sense, no bloody idea.

Generally most of the drivers my way are ok but you do get the odd pratt, I had exactly the same conversation you did Sam with a woman in a red sportscar- I waved at her to slow down and as she passed she said in a really sarcastic voice "Is that slow enough for you darling?" So I said I loved her car but it wouldnt look great with a horse on the bonnett! At one time I used to ride on main roads but never would now- theres no real understanding with drivers so its not worth the risk!

We have a few quietish lanes around our livery yard but still come up against pratts like that. The Council here seem intent on ripping up fields and bridleways to build more housing as we're told there's a housing shortage in Stafford! But we have Cannock Chase which is beautiful and it has loads of bridle routes and luckily I have a trailer to get both my boys there, but now the Council has decided that as the routes are getting a bit worse for wears (due to them not maintaining them for years!) us horse riders now have to buy a special licence to hack out on there. Strange as it also has loads of cycle tracks for the mountain bikers that's getting all churned up but they don't have to buy this licence, as the Council say 'they have to get there by car first' - work that one out

OMG Ceej! No bridleways?! We have just had a small victory for riders here as they made a RUPP (road used as public path) basically for any vechiles into a restricted byway. Must to the disgust of 4X4 drivers and wreckless dirt bikers. Who argued it was gonna affect thier human rights :/ reduced "buisness" to the area and restrict disabled access.
People are idiots. I think we need a THINK ad. To get the message through a really graphic one, cos people just dont think. Think of poor ol Killyourspeed from YH.

this is the exact reason i carry (carried) a long whip on the roads! perfect for hitting cars! when the driver kicks up a fuss you just say just proves how close you were, or swinging the horses bum towards the said toss-pot saying "omg omg he's gonna kick your car!" knew there was a reason to teach turn on the forehand ;D In all seriousness though i do think drivers need to learn how to deal with horses, it would take two seconds to have a section on the hazard perception or a question guaranteed to be on the other part. Unfortunately some people just do not care glad you both came away safe though

I live near a car racing curcuit and the number of people who think out lane is an extention of the race track and drive down it at 70 miles an hour on race days is unbelievable. I have had a number of near misses in car and the reason we missed is that I know where to slow down as who can't see over the bumps or around corners.
I also play chicken on occasion when out on Chomps, he is so big and I am yet another queen of the fluorescents, that I will not move out of the center of the road (the hedges along most of the road are so overgrown that I can't anyway) until they have reached my desirable speed. i.e. slow, they physically can't get past me until I let them. the locals now see me and slow right down and I move straight over, if they don't slow down Chompy forgets that he is quite capable of doing laterally work and keeps plodding up the middle of the road 3 steps forward to every one across so it takes ages for me to move over.

I only have hacking on roads expect for the occasional stubble field. I am quite lucky in that car drivers and tractors etc are all pretty used to horses and mostly slow down and are polite. In the last place i was, although much more country, the roads were very dangerous and their was a lot of speeding, rudness etc. DOn't know why. I think that the driving test should include a section on driving near horses, other animals, pedestrians etc. I think if it was rammed into people's heads, they might start to think and take a bit of responsibilty for the dangerous weapon they are in.

Hi Sam
How awful for you, these people sound like they are just so far up their own a@±§s... absolute idiots.
Thankfully most drivers are pretty good around here, the tractors drivers particularly, but we are lucky to have loads of off road rides as well.
