I have 2 spare saddles at the moment, neither of which fit my new Lady, the medium fit is too narrow and even with a prolite pad under it she is reluctant to go forward into canter and it is obvoiusly pinching.
The wide fiting one looks great when on her back without a rider but as soon as I get on sinks down onto her withers (she is IDxTB I think, so has massive shoulder). with a front riser in the prolite pad its a bit better and when we tried this she was much more forward going.
Now I know these saddles are far from ideal, but until she passes her vetting I dont want to spend any more money on her getting the saddle fitter out and a new saddle. (and to trade in these 2 spares)
The question in which option is better at the moment, is the too wide with pad, better than the too narrow with pad?

That's a difficult one as I can understand your reluctance to shell out just yet, but obv a correctly fitting saddle is in the horses best interest.
I would have thought if one is too narrow, that adding a pad will only make it narrower still?
As a short term tempory soloution I would have thought the too wide saddle with plenty of padding to lift it off her whithers/back would be best?

I agree - although far from ideal, the wide one, but I would try and only ride at walk really and then on hacks, rather than schooling - you dont want her to start associating riding with pain. When is the vetting?

Yup, id say go wider then stick something like a prolite pad and a polypad underneath. Not ideal, but will do.

I have exactly the same problem with Max and just his dressage saddle fits not either GP. I know that the wide saddle with a mattes pad would 'do' but I am not willing to risk any long term damage. have actually been bidding on stubbens on e bay ( where did all the bargains go?) so its interesting to read that Rebanna.

Arrgghhh, she is so not comfortable in either saddle, I have been walking her in the wide one and she is OK but ask any more and she hollows, jogs and throws her head around, and is just not comfortable, looking at the sweat marks from yesterday (because it was hot, not because we were doing much aside from walking in the school) the saddle had slipped too far back.
When I put a pad under the medium one to stop it pinching her withers (at the recommendation of my instructor) she could work in a much better shape in walk and trot but didn't want to go up into canter.
The vet is back tomorrow to check whether she is sound as he though he could see a slight problem with one of her hind legs when the full vetting was carried out on Friday, which (fingers crossed) she will pass. but is was so slight he could not determine if it really was a problem or if she had jsut twisted it in the field.
Unfortunately she was sent over to me from Ireland with no tack so I can't borrow a saddle from her previous owner.
Maxie she looks a very similar shape to your boy, so once the vetting is over with I will keep you posted on how we get one with a saddler.

that would be great ficmag I am at my wits end and have visions of doing this xc training day in my dressage saddle!! grrrrrrr Maxie, my Barnsby is still avail - the saddler valued it at £200-£250, but you can have it for £160 plus P&P if you still interested? as i want it out of my goddam way! These are the measurements (if they make any sense) 8" between the D's 4" being the distance between the padding/panels at the D's 6" the distance between the padding at the top of the shoulders (before the saddle flaps start and it gets wider).

Oh...really sorry to hear that. What did she fail on?

She failed on hind limb lameness, which the vet feels is related to hock or pelvis as there is some muscle wastage on one side, but he couldn't isolate the problem and said the onlt way to tell would be to xray the leg and work your way up.

ceej PMed you about saddle measeren in my dreams could I afford yours! Aww i think thats whats putting most people off, the price. But its immaculate in condition and isnt that old, hence why im not willing to reduce it that much. Ive more or less decided that im just going to trade it in for a dressage saddle for Gem. Its a shame as its such a nice saddle, gutted to have to let it go.
