My horse has only just been able to go out again properly and what a difference it has made- he is sweet natured in any case but was definetely a bit wound up by being in. I walked him out yesterday on a loose rein and he never muffed, we watched a tractor load with fertiliser and then he walked past it without batting an eyelid! We trotted for a time without breaking into canter and he never napped when passing his normal turn off. I was beginning to think I was winding him up but I guess he just needed his 'down'time in the field. I couldnt stop patting him- it was ace!
Also this is the first time Ive had a horse that talks back to me- for instance when Im lungeing him, if he struggles with something he will whicker at me, or when we finish he will neigh at me- does anyone elses horse do this- Ive never known it before. Ive had horses that will whicker when Im getting them hay or a feed or its that time, but never in a response to work we are doing. If anyone elses horse does this Id like to know or am I being daft??

Dems used to talk to me and to other horses a lot when she was a baby (well, a teen-ager), but she doesn't so much now. Only when I take too long coming to her box and she has heard me. Then she calls in a VERY loud voice!

Horses talk to us all the time we're just not smart enough to pick it up.
:oMaybe I should change my name from gnuton to crazy lady but I think most animals can talk to us and I think that in the beginning of time we understood them.

Hi Gnuton I know what you mean and Ive always had empathy with some horses and not others, just recently we had a horse in the field that had advanced arthritis in his hocks. He was in so much pain he couldnt move despite being on pain killers etc. His owner and the vet (shamefully) were burying their heads in the sand. I went to talk to him in the field, give him a mint etc and I swear he told me he'd had enough. His eyes followed me out of that field and were burning my back. I cried all the way home.
I ended up threatening to report them and the horse was euthanised. I was about as popular as smallpox but I believe I did the best thing for that horse as I swear he asked me. Got tears in my eyes now thinking about it. Bless him. Brig

Gnuton- I have that belief too (about people being able to talk to animals in the begining of time) I think some people still retain that ability to a greater extent than others. Sadly I am not a brilliant natual communicator - but I am a good learner so I'm improving. Brigadier- your horse sounds lovely and your hack too. I like the way he tells you his feelings - he obviously is very relaxed and trusting with you. My horses do talk to me (ie wicker, nudge, complain etc) but not when lunged or worked - i think that's amazing.

I have lovely chats with Murph if he is in the mood.....No I have not been drinking or taking illegal substances BTW......he will blow (whisper) into my ear and I just know what he is saying. Unfortunatly I ahve not got the same relationship with Harry...maybe it was a him being my baby thing?

Horses exchange information about each other by breathing left nostril to left nostril.
Both Jazz and Hunter will do this with me, Jazz more so than Hunter. They'll put their left nostril to my nose and we breath each others breath.
When it happens it's very surreal, it's in slow motion, so slow it's as if time is standing still, their breath caressing my cheek, the solemnity with which they take my blowing gently into their nostril.
I'll do this with other horses once in awhile but only with their permission. It's an intimacy that they grant you and unless you ask to share it you are in danger of being hurt.

I just re-read that. I sound like a nutbar, but I'm not. Really, I'm not a wako. I'm just a little girl at heart who still believes in magic.

Aw, Gnuton, don't ever change. In a cynical world it is so heartening to have someone around who can still see the wonder of things. And for the rest of us, caught up in the busy-ness of life, it reminds us to sometimes take time out to just think, watch and listen ... and enjoy. Thank you. If I can manage it I will give you a karma for starting my day off on a lovely note.

Gnuton It is magic it really is! Duckles/ Haffy, I usd to ride this horse once and we really didnt like each other- there was absolutely no reason and he was fairly easy to ride but we just didnt get on, but he had had a male rider previously and he went back to a male rider and he was great with them, so I thnk they are a bit like people in that respect- sometimes you get on with them instantly- sometimes it takes patience and tact, and sometimes it takes no time at all to realise you are onto a non starter.
Do you remember the show jumper Caroline Bradley- she had this lovely grey horse (cant remember his name shame on me) who jumped lovely with her but then she tragically died and the horse went to another rider ( a bloke) and was no good. She obviously had great empathy with that horse and he must of really missed her. I think eventually the story had a happy ending for the horse as a loyal fan of hers ended up with him and retired him with a commitment to treat all the ailments he had developed.
She also bred Milton so what would have happened if she had lived- I bet he would have been just as fantastic if not more so as he was with John Whittaker! brig

If i'm upset i somtimes just stand and watch him, either in the field or in the stable and he will come over and blow gently in my face, i'll blow back and he rubs his muzzle on my face really softly as if to say it's ok mum i'm here. Sadly i'm often in too much of a rush to do this a lot but it always cheers me up

Yes Dessie was a star- they know it as well dont you think?
And Milton- what a horse- would have liked to have met him!
Talking of Steven Hadley, he runs jumping clinics at Bishop Burton Savvy- you will probably get involved with them when you start. I went and watched one- he was great- will book one when Basil is a bit more 'started'. maybe towards the summer. brig
