Allrounder first horse for novice. Something that will bring me on a bit after just being in a riding school but not scare me off! sort of 15.2 - 16 hh (i'm quite tall for my age (13)) and 7-12ish. One of those 100% horses that are really hard to find

Not sure how tall obv, but this is me, all of 5ft8, on my 14.3hh native x ;D img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Snip/2008/Gem/IMG_0530.jpgimg.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Snip/2008/Gem/IMG_0496.jpgimg.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Snip/2008/Gem/IMG_0490.jpgShe wouldnt be suitable as youre after an allrounder suitable for novice, which shes not any of that (unless youre a nervous train wreck when hacking and she'll soon sort that out) but just an example that sometimes its better to go a little smaller for a first hoss than bigger ones. I was talking to my friend the other day who was saying how flighty Gem is, but it only took me a couple of minutes to explain to her that shes my confidence giver, however she wouldnt double up as being a confidence giver for my friend, despite us after the same thing. 100% horses are nigh on impossible to find unfortunately, but i can keep my eye out in this area? Have you looked on horsemart etc? horsequest, adhorse, coloured contacts, errrm any website which sells horses!!! Id be wary of websites such as lowfield stables, bombproof/lazy plods ... If theres a horse in Glos or Notts and you want it checking out first before you trek over (dont know where youre coming from) then im more than happy to look if im in the area at that time. I would steer clear from thoroughbreds/arabs - a few may work out, but theyre quite hot headed and as a first horse you might struggle. Personally, not meaning to be biased or anything, but i think something irish would do you!! ;D (Ok by biased im classing the fact that out of my 3 horses, 2 are irish!) Connemaras are known for their all rounderness (is that a word?) and because theyre stocky, they can take up height easily. Mines abit scatty, but shes safe... Savkins also has a conny who will back me up when i say theyre the best breed in the world!!! ;D If youre heading towards a specific breed, you could also look on the breed website (for eg seeing as were on the conny subject, the BCPS website - theres an over section on there for ponies over 14.2hh)

I agree with maes seren, go for something smaller. My horse is 14.3 and is plenty big enough for me although I am not as tall as you. You'd be surprised how much height a chunkier horse can "manage" (not the right word sorry). You also have to consider that you also have to handle the horse on the ground and a bigger horse may be more difficult to deal with purely from a weight and height perspective. I really think that for a first horse go for something mature, about 15 - 15.2 ish and not too fine - and continue lessons on him / her. Good luck with your search Zx

I don't think size is really an issue. Temper is. Some big ones are as sweet and considerate as you'd want them, and I have known a few who were small and mean! Also, at 13, you will be growing some more, maybe, and how sad would it be if you had to give up your horse after a couple of years when he has still several years of joy to give you?

Yeh, thats why I was thinking of a bigger one! But I spose if its quite stocky it would be ok!! Thanks for the offer to check any out Masseren (think I spelt your name right!!) I'm in south buckinghamshire so that would be very helpful!! I have been looking at horsemart, it's got a really good search engine!! Also, thanks for the breed info as im not the best at breeds and their temprements!!

I'm 5'10/11" and Bernie is 15hh, I agree that it is more to do with temper but if you want a confidence giver you don't want something that will be too strong (most of the time larger horses have more weight to through around) all horses have there moments remember, even the angels. Also dont be put off by something a bit lazy either. When i got Bernie I was so so nervous after an accident, he was so leg dead and unfit I really had to think about riding him and getting him to work, it totally took my mind off being nervous. Good luck keep us informed

This is me ridin my brothers pony. Hes 13hh and im 5ft 4 1/2" (that half is very important lol) Cos he is sooooooo stocky i dont really look too silly on him. although if i ride him for too long my knees hurt (they hang 2" off the front of the saddle"). Martine is right though temperment is the most important thing of all. cant beat a kind neddy.
