Grrrr Rant coming! Now, we all like a few fireworks on 5th November and I'd like that tradition to continue. But here I am, on the last day of August listening to a barrage of bangs, whizzes and screeches whilst my poor dog shivers and shakes and hides behind the sofa panting like a steam train. It makes me so mad!! The thing is, will there be intermittent fireworks going off from now when it used to start 1st October? Or is it just a one-off celebration? (if it is, then it's rather early in the evening to be letting them off). I don't like to be a kill joy, but from end Sept/beginning Oct they usually start and go on into the New Year. It's just too much. It makes my dogs life a misery and I know I'm not the only one who feels that way. I know girls who've had bangers thrown at their horses and the lady I used to live next door to had a dog who was taken by some children (thugs) who tucked bangers in his collar and lit them. He was a nervous wreck for the rest of his life. I'd like to see fireworks sold only to licenced people for displays only. And displays should all be within one week of the 5th Nov to get it all over and done with and then special ones on New Years Eve. Rant over.

Totally agree with you there Flo - fireworks used to be on Nov 5th (or perhaps 3rd, 4th and 5th) and that was it. Then they started on new years eve (me thinks it was the millenium that started that one) and now they're going off all the b****y time! Luckily my cat has gotten over her fear of fireworks, but I remember her hiding under my bed and refusing to come out for days when she was a kitten...god only knows what she feels like now they're going off all the time?!?!?
Grrr! People make me so mad!
And another thing, why do you need to have your own fireworks anyway? Surely if they were only sold to display-people (i.e. people holding public displays) then we'd have less trouble AND you get more fireworks and more enjoyment from them (more people to share them with and more food! lol) AND you wouldn't necessarily even have to pay to go and see the display - just watch it from your window!!!
ARGH! *pulls out hair* I hate fireworks! I've got no idea how Faith reacted to them last year (she was tucked up in her stable then) but she could well still be outside when they start them this year...especially if they've already started!
One last thing...why set off fireworks when its still daylight? What is the point in that?!? IMO that's just a complete waste of money and a plain nuisance to whoever has to listen to the flippin' things!
Right, ok. Rant over now...

our dog must be weird she's never had a problem with fireworks even before she was deaf, she sits on the bed and watches them with us the dog next door though goes mental they've even soundproofed one of the bedrooms so that it can't hear the fireworks

rebanna, thanks for that. I did speak to the vet and he said try valarian, so I'll get some and see if it works. Also the cd. We do always ignore her and carry on as normal, as I know trying to comfort her will only reinforce her fear! She's not quite as bad as she used to be but she's still pretty awful and the longer it goes on the more miserable it is for her. I'll let you know how we get on! spotti, thank goodness I'm not the only in favour of displays only! I know people like to have them in the back garden but, no matter how careful some people are, kids get hold of them. Getting together at a display would at least get people to see their neighbours and have a bit of a party. I walked into Tesco last year and walked straight out again when I saw a huge firework counter just inside the entrance! The only thing I would have bought from them on that day was matches!!

Well, there you go then. If the Ausies can do it, then so can we! Don't think it's very sensible to have a display at a horse show though!
