I remember Diana's death...mainly being totally pee'd off about it after a while because that was all anyone talked about for weeks (and Blue Peter had gone off/been interrupted to show us all)
9/11 was horrid. I remember being told about it in an assembly at school (1st one of the year. Year 7 and everything so it was my first assembly in a 'big school' and it was all about that)
7/7 I remember vaguely, but I remember last years floods more!
And Myra Hindley...name rings a bell but cannot remember why. Any clues??? Was she the one (of a pair) that kidnapped Jessica and Holly(?) and then they were found drowned and raped in a bath a few weeks/months later???

Mmmmm, but I can remember when Kennedy was assassinated. Do not dare ask me who he was. I was in a convent boarding school in Glastonbury and I remember all the Irish girls (I have no idea why there were Irish girls in Glastonbury, the poor beggars must have felt more lost than me even - my mother was living in Majorca) anyway, they were hysterical because they thought it was the start of world war three, since he was Irish by descent. It's not as silly as it sounds now. And talking of world events ..... yup, first walk on the moon .....
Anyone else an old fogey? ;D

...oh, and Diana's death .... OMG my mother peed me off by phoning me at 6am to tell me the news but I'd got a baby of just a few days old and I'd just got him (and myself) to sleep ..... and I wasn't a fan of Di's anyway. Grrrrr

umm...I remember the floods too...left work at 2.00 travelled about 5 miles down penistone/halifax road, as couldn't get to M1 as ecclesfield was already submerged, then got stuck ....took till gone 11pm that night to get back the 5 or so miles to my mums having abandoned any hope of getting home. Got home teatime next day via a day trip round Chesterfield as made my way to Eckington/Renishaw and of course road by Golf course was under water too!
911 I had just got back from work and it was on telly, then our neighbour (and riding pal) came dashing across because she's seen me very upset as her brother should have been on that second plane but his meeting had been cancelled...luck or what...she was in a state needless to say.

Diana's death - on my way to the stables. I couldn't understand why all the radio stations were playing classical music. It was such a shock.
9/11 - Just finished work and again on my way to the stables. When it was announced on the radio, I thought it was a joke. I think the DJ did as well because he said I'm going to check this out and come back. It was true and I thought how could such a terrible accident happen. I was horrified when the truth dawned. There were only a few of us at the yard by the time I got there (around 1.00 p.m). We just did our jobs quietly and kept going back to our cars for updates.
7/11 - Was on a bloody course in London! The tube train I was on lost power at Moorgate. The lights went off and one. Eventually, we were on our way. I have since realised that this must have been when the Aldgate bomb went off. Got to my course (the next line I went on must have been unaffected or others had not gone off yet.) We were told to switch off mobiles. Then someone saw on the computer that there had been an incident and said he had to go. Minutes later, someone came with the news and said we had to stay there. Lunch time they said we had to go but there were no stations open! One of the girls took me back to her office and about 2 - 3 p.m. we started the hour's walk to Fenchurch Street - the only station that was about to open. There was no traffic apart from emergency vehicles and taxis. You couldn't make any calls on mobiles - I had managed to email work to ring my OH (who I knew would be going out of his mind with worry) and tell him I was okay. The streets were packed with people quietly walking, all the streets and bridges full of this sea of people trying to get home. No one was panicing - it was all quite good humoured as we all felt thankful to be in one piece. It's a day I shall never forget.

I also remember Myra Hindley and Ian Brady and the first walk on the moon and the Kennedy assasination!
I was very sad as well, when John Lennon was shot. That someone who was such an advocate for peace should die a violent death.

I remember Diana's death, it really affected me, but I think as much as anything it was because my dad was dying of cancer at the time and he died just a week or so later.
I remember them walking on the moon and watching it on the TV
I was at work when 9/11 happened and was kept up to date by a friend at home who kept ringing me with updates.
I also remember Elvis dying and the sinking of theHerald of Free Enterprise (Ferry disaster) and the Piper Alpha disaster (oil rig) oh and the chemical leak in Bhophal (sp)

Yup Popsicle, I remember the Zeebrugge disaster too. In fact, I remember most of the disasters as I was working in news at the time: Lockerbie, the Air India jumbo, and later on, Concorde (the TVs are always on in the newsroom so I remember just being transfixed by the video clip). Talking of TV, the first Gulf war was extraordinary, the way we could see it being waged on TV ....

Myra hindley- I remember seeing her photo in the papar and thinking how it was such an awful picture but never quite believing any person could do what they did, then as Ive got older nothing suprises me anymore. Saw something on TV the other night about the BTK serial killer in america- now his coldness is terrifying! Di's death- had just had my heart broken and was driving to my friend in East Yorkshire for some TLC. She told me when I got there and to be honest I wasnt that bothered. Id heard of some of her antics and didnt think she was much of a role model.
9/11- in bed with nasty cold- hubby rang and told me to watch TV nd stayed there all day transfixed!
7/7- about to get on ferry to france - stayed in bar watching news about it and endured massive delays and vehicle searches other side.
Anyone else really worried about our tendency as humans to wage war and self destruct?
I too was amazed re the gulf war and the tendency of the armed forces to broadcast and show of all their new techniques and technology. It crossed my mind at the time that they were anxious for war to try everything out.
Can anyone remind me what the falklands war was about? It seemed important at the time but now......

Falklands was usual British - 'oh it has been under our control for years and even though its thousands of miles away and right next door to argentinia we dont want them to get it' so good old Maggie declared war and many many young men (and possibly woman but I dont think so) were killed so Britian could retain soverinty of a rock off the bottom of Chile and Argentina.
