on behalf of a friend, as this problem is really confusing both of us Annie had a hunting fall about five years ago and had a back injury, shes been sound and in condition since though. when shes ridden she tenses her jaw and strains to open her mouth, and puts her head right down, which unbalances her rider a bit. she still moves fine, but the stress seems to come from her mouth. her teeth were done in april (no problems) and saddle done yesterday (slight re-flock, no problems) and she has been ridden in a dutch gag, pelham and a snaffle with no change shes eating fine and happy in herself so can't see it being an abcess? any ideas?

Has she had her back checked since? What about trying her bitless??? (I've got a spare Dr Cooks if she wants to borrow it, depending on the horses size)

sounds like problem in the neck/back area as said above.
i have friend who had very simliar problem with her ex trotter and eventually a healer (Margrit Coates) told her it was broken jaw- x ray confirmed lower jaw had been broken in 2 places probabaly when he was being raced on the tracks in france, the poor horse was in constant pain.

Sounded like back to me as well. I take it that she's not ridden in a flash? Perhaps try her without noseband? Or riding in head collar? Just to eliminate problems in those areas.

TBH on those symptoms it could be anything, I thought spine initially but could even be an obstruction in windpipe given the description so I would get a vet to do a thorough check and to observe the horse ridden!

also backs are a very complex area and while I am sure the saddle fitter is very good at her job its not the same as training for years to be a chiro or physio and I do urge getting the back checked out fully.

Just thinking about this- Maxie your help needed also- could she simply be asking to go long and low? On the symptoms does she appear in pain or is she taking the bit (quite strongly) down against the riders hands? If this is the case its a really good thing where the rider then needs to do a half halt to re-engage the hocks and re-gain balance, but then let her continue to do it and repeat the half halt. Just a wild card but for anyone not familiar with this process to engagement it may seem a problem.

thats true maybe she really wants to allowed to be lighter in the hand. Is your friend heavy in the hand and allowing her to run onto her forehand.? what happens if you really lighten the hand and allow her to take the contact forward?
she is trying to tell you something and it may be you need to listen very closly to hear what it is.

There is nothing like the zeal of the converted, obviously, but now that I am...... LOL echoing what was said above about the saddle lady, I really do think it is worth while getting an osteo/chiro etc to take a look, on the premise that you never know. I didn't
