Obv for dressage you need to be plaited so it can depend sometimes on the order it's run in as local events can be a law into themselves. I always unplaited for XC incase I needed something to hang onto!!

In my youth I did this...

I took the plaits out except for the one that lies right behind the head band of the bridle. I tied some thin string around the plait and the headband. Then if I fell off, the bridle couldn't be pulled off. This was what we all did at the time.

Normally in BE it is 30-40 minutes so no real time to remove them and get horse / rider changed.
