I need lots of support from you guys ... I've done something that few other people here understand - I've arranged a visit from the back man (osteopath) for Paco, on the off chance he may find some reason for P's left canter evasion. But, apart from my No2 trainer, who uses him for her nags, everyone else thinks I'm barking mad and chucking money away. He is expensive as he has to come from Lyon (blumming miles away) but is cheaper if three of you on the same yard can be done in one visit. Needless to say no on else is interested and I'm happy to pay full whack as I don't want to dismiss something just because I have no experience of it. But it's feeling uncomfortable! On the other hand, I know I'm right to try.

At the end of the day you are doing what you think gis right for your horse. I have had Bernie 8 years and it is only in the last 2 or 3 that i had his back checked an i am so glad i did! He is much more comfortable and has managed to build a much better topline. If he is an honest guy he will tell you if in is not back related and you can move on to something he may suggest. Either way paco will benefit. Trust your instinct

Becca is right- always trust your instinct. BUt Racaille, I can really understand what you mean. When I got the back man down first, everyone thought I was mad and soft and I got comments like 'those fellows always find something wrong with any horse'. I was really really glad I did and likewise when I went with my instincts and got another back man, ( one who was highly recommended by other people who found nothing weird about getting their horses backs' checked.) Only wish I had done it earlier. Mind you, in my old yard, even getting teeth or saddled checked let alone the back was considered the action of a lunatic. So I am used to feeling . But as you are not French, they will probably just think you are a little excentric in a charming foreign way. - not that it matters, if nothing wrong with Paco, you will be delighted. And if there is something a bit off that he can fix, you will be delighted. Good Luck

racaille - You've got my full support! ;D I paid out for a physio to come and look at Murph. I was pretty sure he didn't have anything physically wrong with him but it was something that I had to rule out before taking things any further. Sure enough, she could find nothing wrong with him. I was delighted! You need to have a fairly thick skin to do things differently to others in the horse world. Thankfully, 28 years of having a horse who didn't respond to "conventional" methods ensured I grew a really thick skin! If you feel it's something you need to do then do it!

I've used the back lady and so have lots of people I know. It has become very popular and has been of benefit to so many. So perhaps once they've seen what he does and how it benefits (although I hope he doesn't find anything wrong) they may change their minds.

OMG OMG!!!! Aaaargh, hardly know where to start! The osteo came today and we had the briefest chat as to why I'd called him and then he set straight to work. Immediately he found problems: Paco had a very sore shoulder, which had set up referred pain in his lumbar region as he held himself in a way to lessen the shoulder pain. The osteo asked if he was irregular on the left rein - yes - bucked on left lead canter - yes - cantered on the wrong (left) lead on the lunge - yes! Some great clankings later, Paco was falling asleep with pleasure and the osteo, though he wants me to call him in two weeks time, thinks we should see an immediate improvement. He says poor Paco may have had this problem for a couple of years (dear god why didn't I find someone to help him sooner, I feel a real foul smelling poopy). On a positive note, he was really pleased that Paco is not damaged in a way that a lot of Iberique horses are here: they get put into work so young, searching for that blumming outline, that quite soon they lose the ability to really bring their backs up. The osteo showed me that Paco can still raise his, so that is a terrific sign. In fact, the chap thinks that if all goes well, Paco is sorted and will only need a yearly checkup. The cause? He thinks it was most likely a rolling injury in his paddock. Paco does like his dust bath! I now have to wait three days before I can ride him, but I can't wait to see if left canter now goes better (although I realise that Paco has now learned to evade, so it won't be entirely plain sailing...) Poor boy. What a cr@p owner I am

Fanstastic results! How can you call yourself a crap owner? A CO wouldnt have got a speacialist in- theyd have bowed to yard pressure!
You should feel well pleased!

Glad Paco is ok and injuring himself while rolling...sounds like something Faith would do (hey, I wonder if that's what put her pelvis out of line in the first place???) Bet others at your club are keeping quiet now because they said not to bother. Say "Hi" to Paco

Hi racaille, glad to hear all went well with "back man". Paco should feel so much better but don't expect miracles as I know from experience that some "evasion" has become second nature. Take it steady Zx ps you are def no CO!

no no no you are not a crap owner. you should be pleased you got someone out! I didn't get bernie's back, teeth or even saddle professionally checked till about 5 years after I got him!!! (just trusted YO) I just went along with everyone else, horses have shoes! so Bernie had shoes etc. I then went to college and learnt more correct ways of doing things and how crap did i feel that Bernie had never been checked! Basically after that waffle, the longer you have a horse the more you learn. You'll have to let us know how he goes

I got the back lady out when I got my horse and the differnce in the horse was noticable within days! Amazing how different the horse is several months on!
I was always a bit sceptical about back people but would now always get my horses checked once a year and always get a new horse checked.
I am sooooooooooooooooooooo in favour of back people now, esp as i suffer from a bad back so understand a bit of what it must be like for a horse!
