Willow had something very similar last year - looked like he had been attacked by lots of horseflies and it was a bit tender...the following day the swelling all merged into one round swelling (raised by about half centimeter and flat on top, about half foot in diameter!). Because it was on his neck i rang the vet who said it was just an allergic reaction to something and to just leave it for few days to see if it got worse. It just went away although he did get a bit scabby about a week after. I hadnt changed anything either and never did know what caused it...
Maybe just leave it for a day or so (unless it gets worse or there are other symtoms like glads, or loss energy etc)

Can't say I have any idea but I a friend's horse used to get 'heat lumps' at least that was what she was told. Never did any harm and went away eventually. I wonder if your horse got some kind of reaction to a bite or even a plant??? Hope she's better soon

Mmmmm, puzzling ... it sounds rather like an allergic reaction. The mad mare had one two weeks ago after she was put in the field with Paco and Racaille. Her face came up in big 'measles' spots (she looked truly hideous lol) which turned into yukky scabs which then had to be scrubbed off every day. She came in from the field and started to get better right away. Now she's back in her old (grassless) paddock and fine, although still with hairless spots all over her stupid face. The hair is regrowing though. So, obviously she is allergic to something, as neither of my boys have had any trouble (that's because they are sensible and not dizzy like the mad mare ) I know this doesn't help you as nothing has changed ... sorry
